1994 DODGE RAM 2500 HAS INTERMITANT NOISE IN THE REAR AXLE AREA.

I jacked up the rear end to take a visual. Carrier bearing on the drive shaft had fallen completely apart. I'm happy because I felt sure it was the rear axle bearings which is a lot more expensive. By the way the 90w in the rear end was a least a qt. low. I have put in 1 quart and will get more tomorrow. I am having a mech put in the carrier bearing as we speak. $150 parts & labor

Something is loose there. Secure the front wheels with blocks, raise the back of the pickup and start vigorously shaking things (in the order of probability): exhaust line (most likely problem since its rubber bushings wear out the fastest), suspension parts, shock absorbers, transmission shaft and the wheel themselves. Finally rotate the wheels - if the noise comes from the differential you will have to take the pickup to a shop, adjusting it demands a lot of experience and good tools.

1999 Dodge RAM 2500 drums won't come off

Well, I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 2WD with rear drum brakes and I tried to buy a puller to get them off. Couldn't find one anywhere. I welded one together with some scrap steel and a stearing wheel puller bolted to the top. I was supprised it worked so well. There not easy to beat off. All that is required is sufficient force to move them. Once there loose the rest is easy.
