Question about 1996 Saturn SL
Open the hood. just to the left and below the battery you will see a bell shaped housing bolted to the engine. this is the bell housing which contains the flywheel and connects the engine to the transmission. the starter is on the back of the engine, bolted into the bell housing so its gear can mesh with the gear ring on the outside of the flywheel. that should give you enough info to find it. the starter was always fairly easy to replace on old V8s, however you will find the starter replacement on the S series saturn to be very difficult, especially if you do not have a lift. if you are bound and determined to do it yourself make sure you disconnect the negative battery cable first.
