Just asking so that I can be clear; it is located on the differential and not on the engine or transfer case?

Where is the vehicle speed sencor on a dodge ram 1500 V8 cyl. 1998 . the book says its on the tranny or rearend or could be on the steering colume. can't find it.

If its a 4x4 its in the transfer case near the back on the housing the drive shaft goes into. The one in the rear end is located dead center on top of the differential.

2000 dodge ram check engine light came on. code p 0720 is

P0720 is a code for the output shaft speed sensor on the transmission. If you are handy with a volt/ohm meter you can test the resistance of the sensor unpluged. should be 500-700 ohms. or you can just put a new sensor in, its a comon problem.

Why wont my check engine light go off when auto store used scanner to reset code i replaced the speed sensor for code PO720. For my 1998 dodge ram conversion van

The best thing that ever happened to the parts house was having a scanner. Just because a code names a part does not mean the part is bad. it could be a wire or the pcm or a related part.

There is a lot more to a P0720 code that a scanner is not prepared to answer. Time to see a TECH.

The best thing that ever happen to me, a tech was the parts house getting a scanner, then selling thier customer a part and they come to me to have it put in and then when it does not fix the problem I get paid 2 times, once for the customers diagnostic work and once for my own.

If you come to a shop and tell them what you want replaced it's on you, but if they tell you whats bad and it dont fix it then it's on them.

Check engine light with following codes p 1529 p0720 p0715

P1529 indicates that your TCM asked the ECM to turn on the check engine lamp.

The range switch and the output speed sensors are the items that are abnormally affecting the operation of the transmission. The diagnostic logic in your computer can distinguish these issues from one another, so you'll definitely want to do both. You have no diagnostic code for the input speed sensor (P0715) listed, so I have made no recommendation to replace it. In my opinion, it's not a labor-intensive repair, so I wouldn't recommend replacing it unless you have reason to believe it's bad.

DTC - P0720 (OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR SYSTEM)
Code No. P0720 Output shaft speed sensor system
If the output from the output shaft speed sensor is continuously 50% lower than the vehicle speed for 1 second or more while driving in 3rd or 4th gear at a speed of 30 km/h or more, it is judged to be an open circuit or short-circuit in the output shaft speed sensor and diagnostic trouble code No. P0720 is output. If diagnostic trouble code No. P0720 is output four times, the transmission is locked into 3rd gear or 2rid gear as a fail-safe measure.
Probable cause
Malfunction of the output shaft speed sensor
Malfunction of the transfer drive gear or driven gear
Malfunction of connector
Malfunction of the TCM

DTC - P0715 (INPUT SHAFT SPEED SENSOR SYSTEM)
Code No. P0715 input shaft speed sensor system
If no output pulse is detected from the input shaft speed sensor for 1 second or more while driving in 3rd or 4th gear at a speed of 30 km/h (19 mph) or more, it is judged to be an open circuit or short-circuit in the input shaft speed sensor and diagnostic trouble code No. P0715 is output. If diagnostic trouble code P0715 is output four times, the transaxle is locked into 3rd gear or 2nd gear as a fail-safe measure.
Probable cause
Malfunction of the input shaft speed sensor
Malfunction of the underdrive clutch retainer
Malfunction of connector
Malfunction of the TCM

Is needed replace.

Dodge Durango 1998 5.2L Output Speed Sensor code P0720 Location

Its in different locations depending on if its 2wd or 4wd. For 2wd its in front of the drice shaft or for 4wd its in the tranfer case, just look for a white shape like box with wires plugged into it and you need a socket to remove it, iam not sure how much it is to replace as the cost varies at different shops.

P0720 error code on 1998 dodge intrepid

First buy the input and output speed sensors so you will know what you are looking for. They are located on the left side of the tranny with very similar connections. They just screw in with a socket and ratchet. Change them one at a time because they are different and you don't want to get them mixed up by pulling both before installing one.
