Question about Jeep CJ7

1 Answer

1978 CJ-7. Drives fine until I stop and try to restart. Cranks well , but won't start, Naptha down the throat doesn't help. 12 V going to Coil, but nothing out. If I wait a half hour, it starts fine. ?????

your first problem is that you are taking it to a mechanic with questionable qualifications
engines don't clear throats or have relays do it for them
the car has an onboard reporting system called an ECM and any mechanic who knows his trade would connect a scanner to the data plug and read the fault codes ( you can do that at autozone or like spares shops for free)
knowing the fault codes , the faulty sensors can then be fixed or replaced
from your description of the problem it appears to be a cold engine problem as you say runs well for the rest of the day
That indicates an ambient temp sensor, Baro sensor, MAP/VAF sensor and low fuel pressure from a faulty fuel pressure regulator sensor problem
find yourself an accredited service center that has experience on your make of vehicle and have it properly diagnosed

Can i replace the electronic control module with points in my 73 ford 460.

I suspect that the problem here is an incorrect coil being used. you can buy 12 volt direct coil or 12 volt that has to be used with a resistor in the circuit to reduce the voltage to around 7 volts. If you have a 12 volt coil needing a resistor but don' have one then the coil overhaets and like all transformers will break down internall until they cool down. Resistor coils all start on 12 volts but in the run circuit, the current is diverted either through a resistor wire ( 2nd wire on the coil) or through a resistor normally a white ceramic unit near the coil

1978 CJ-7 304 V8 runs until warmed up then dies, restarts after cooling down-fuel filters & fuel OK, timing OK, bad EGR Valve?

im surprised you 78 cj has an egr it must be modded out i would gess that your using an ecm for ignition check grounds fuel pressure pressure regulator if its egr your worried about its for emissions exaust gass recerculation it takes unused fuel frome your exaust recerculates it to the intake helps keep the intake cool and aplies the unused fuel to the intake better econamy but you have to have a cat to make it work if you do it may be pluged try taking the forward o2 sensor out and see if it stays running if it dose change the catalitic converter

I am not sure about the 1985 Most had a white resistance coil mounted on the firewall has two screws on it and is bolted on the firewall. They way it works is the coil gets 12 volts till it starts then drops back down to 8 or 9 volts. to see if it is the resistor just run a 12 volt wire to the positive or battery side of the coil and see if it starts if it does it can be two things. One the resistor Or the ignition switch, They had both One when you crank it over it fed 12 volts directly to the coil from the ignition switch then when released to the run position it feeds threw the droop down coil, To know for sure you would need a book to know inexactly where they are.

Try changing the fuel filter and checking the fuel pressure at the shredder valve. The readings should be 60 to 65psi with the fuel line pressurized with the engine not running, once the engine is running. It should drop by 5psi. Start with the simple things first. Keep me posted, be glad to help.
