No it is not common. i would check the hoses that connect to the core. sounds like they are damaged or not clamped on tight enough.

Heater cores are a common issue on the trucks. I do not rememeber the after market brand recommended that lasts longer, but if you can find a local weld/braze shop maybe they can put material on it that will not leak. Sometimes the solder joints just dont do well in these systems.

Coolant leaks from front of engine compartment on 1989 Ford F-150

have a coolant pressure test done on the system and find the leaks. If it is an old radiator with plastic tanks then the tanks may be split (common) -check radiator hoses for splits and radiator cores for leaks. If the hose is enlarged past the clamp replace it as it is about to burst anyway check water pump and check all points where hoses are clamped onto aluminium housings as they corrode under the hoses.

heater core that springs a leak repeatedly is the result of vibration and it is rubbing against something. Check all the locations in the plenum and firewall

If you are getting coolant inside the cabin the common cause is a leaking heater core.

Test heater core

Robert,
Using a cooling system pressure test tool to pressurize the entire cooling system, a heater core will leak into the HVAC [heater, ventilation and air conditioning] box [located under the dash board]. Once coolant leaks into this box, it will either drop onto the carpeting on the passenger side front floor OR drip out the condensate tube [where the A/C condensate water leaks out under the truck] The condensate tube is a rubber pipe located on the lower end of the passenger side firewall.
Leakage into the passenger carpet [most common place for it to leak] will appear as a wet carpet.
If heater core replacement is required, do yourself a favor. Buy and install a new A/C evaporator [located in the HVAC box with the heater core] at the same time. This is a big job to do. No sense replacing the heater core now, only to have the A/C evaporator fail next summer, forcing you to repeat all that labor [8 hours for a pro mechanic who knows what he is doing].

My ford 1997 F-150 4.6L has a antifreeze smell in the cab when it is running, think it might be the heatercore?

yes it sounds like it might be the heater core when your heater core goes bad it leaks and seeing that it is in the cab it will have that smell usually when it leaks your floors will be wet from the leak. bypass the heater core unitl you can get it fixed to prevent any electrical problems

First you need to purge the trapped air out of the system. Go to a shop that has evac/fill equipment and tehy can do it for about $75. It is ahrd to get air out. park uphill and rasie front of truck as high as possible, and keep cap loose during warm up. It will burp air. Then tighrten cap & let it cool while keeping the reservoir full during cool down. Repeat at least once. Make sure hose from rad to reservoir is tight at both ends to avoid sucking air in.

report results.

No heat is a sign of trapped air.

it is either a faulty part or when the heater core was installed the core was not installed correctly..they may have not reinstalled the mounting brackets for the heater core..incorrect instalation will either cause the brackets to rub through the core or allow the core to vibrate an break
