Just make sure you remove the transponder before you play with it ,but try some engine oil in the lock first ,that fish oil spray isnt much good for anything as it dries out ,its only good for rubbing on your knees or back if they ache .

How do i know whether to change the ignition switch or the ignition lock ( cylinder& keys) to my 2001 ford f-150

Well if the lock is turning the switch, the lock is doing its job.
Sometimes the link between the lock and the switch wears out, but thats rare.

No power..motor not turning lights, fan or anything. booster cables no help

Check the battery connections are tight and ensure they are connected to the car correctly.

Also a common fault on vw's the ignition switch sometimes stick internally to the off position so when your turning the key the switch wont move round to on.

Try WD-40 in the ignition lock, it may be this its hard to say without seeing the car, But do check the ignition.

Hope this helps.

My ignition wont turn ... even if I wiggle the steering wheel. Could it be frozen??

if you have something like WD-40 that you could spray in the key slot,to try to free up sticking tumbler in the switch,And if you have another key to try,you can wiggle the key going in up and down a little then respray then rekey ,you'll see alot of black residue coming out when you remove the key, just wipe it off each time.

Key will not go into the ignition on my VW jetta

There is a security flap that is supposed to recognize only your car key. Sometimes this flap can get stuck down. The quick fix is to have the dealership get some WD-40 sprayed on it so it wont stick. The more permanant fix (and better fix) is to have the dealership replace your ignition. The ignition is covered under most warrantys.

The key gets stuck in the ignition sometimes it turns and other times it doesn't. could it be the transponder?

The first thing to check is to carefully examine the ignition key. If it is worn down, or even slightly bent, get a new key cut. If you don't have a key in good shape to copy from, your Toyota dealer can cut one, if they know your VIN number. If your key looks good, the most likely suspect is your ignition lock cylinder. You can try lubing it with a little graphite lock lube, but no WD-40 or anything!

Brake lights refuse to turn off.

Your brake light switch is stuck. It is located on the brake pedal and they will do this sometimes. You can replace this part for relatively cheap and it doesn't take very long. The other option is to spray it with some WD-40 and try to work it out. Do one of these two things and you will be good to go. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!

95 escort. when key is removed the signal continues to chirp.

Your ignition switch thinks the key is still in ignition.

Take some WD-40 or better yet some graphite powder and insert where key goes. Push key in and out. Relube again. Repeat key in and out.

This will lube the switch and hopefully free up the mechanism that is sticking.

1998 Wranger Ignition Key Stuck / Steering Column Locked

I have had this same problem on 4 of my Jeeps. A locksmith provided me with two answers.
This key thing happens to me at least once a week.
It is a common problem with Jeeps. 1998 Wrangler, 2007 Cherokee and two 2000 Cherokees all had the issue.

1. Replace the tumbler assembly. $150. USD (Not!)
2. Place the key in the ignition, smartly impact the key on the **** end, end that is sticking out of the ignition. (Harder is not better) strike straight on as to not break the key off. 4 or 5 strikes should fix the problem every time.

FYI - flooding the switch with WD-40 will not fix the issue, it is a tumbler problem.

2003 Ford Focus ZX5 Steering Wheel column locked...key goes in but does not start the car....can't move wheel... Wheel is not straight....will not move even if totally locked....up..

All you need is two inexpensive things to fix this. 1. Hammer and 2. WD-40. First, put the key in the ignition and tap it with the hammer. (this should unlock the steering wheel and the iginition) Second, spray some WD-40 in the key opening on the ignition, then put the key in again and proceed to tap it some more with the hammer. (WHEN I SAY TAP THE HAMMER I DO NOT MEAN HIT IT WITH FULL FORCE)... Any who keep put WD-40 and tapping it until you can turn the key without the help of the hammer... (should be at least 4 times) THE PROBLEM IS THAT WITH TIME DEBRI BUILDS UP IN THE IGNITION, AND THIS CAUSES THE STEERING TO LOCK UP WHEN YOU PLACE THE KEY IN THE IGNITION. THE HAMMER UNLOCKS THE SPRINGS IN THE IGNITION AND THE WD-40 CONVERTS THE DEBRI TO LIQUID SO IT CAN CLEAN THE IGNITION...
