Stuck on one gear and leaking transmission oil despite having replaced all the seals

I take it this a manual gear box and the seal you refer to is the pinion output shaft seal? It sounds like your gear box has a severe fault, maybe a chewed up bearing and this is causing the output shaft to precess which will open up a small gap with with the seal allowing fluid to exit. When the seals were changed what did the transmission oil look like?. Was it opaque and murky - it should be clear and red. Drain the gear box and collect the fluid through a muslin cloth and then insert a finger in the drain plug hole and feel around the base of the gear box. If there is a thick layer of fine grey paste on the gear box bottom plate this is bad sign it is casing material. Does the muslin cloth contain any particulates of hard metal, theses are fragments of case hardened gear teeth. If so the gear box is done for and will need replacing. It might be possible to repair the box but the chances very much are that getting a good used one from a reputable breaker will be much cheaper. Always do the finger check on a gear box when drained of fluid - the stuff that sticks to your finger will tells you a lot about the general condition. A good gear box free of wear has no deposits.

it is hard to diagnose with so many listed faults
first up slipping when hot indicates a weak pressure plate tension but the reasons o slipping when hot may start at a bad clutch master cylinder not fully allowing the brake fluid back to the reservoir ( blocked compensating port)
that creates a catch 22 situation where the pressure place is not fully engaged and so it slips marginally and that builds up friction heat which in tern cause what is called brake fade . In other words the friction surface ( clutch plate facing) cannot absorb any more heat and so it slips
moving on , the slippage can be from excessive oil on the linings but if that is the case it will slip or grab ( shudder) on take off
The oil will most likely be from from a front input shaft seal and that may be from failing oil seal or overfull transmission or blocked breather for the transmission
seal generally will produce a oil mist in the bell housing after time but adding to your statement of hard to get/change gears I suspect that the oil leak could be from a failing front shaft bearing of the transmission not allowing the seal to work properly
To sum up , the transmission will have to come out and the clutch kit and throwout bearing replaced
from the slippage I would recommend that the flywheel clutch face be machine to remove high hot spots and that combination will give a smooth clutch operation at this point if there are signs of a rear main seal leaking , replace it before the flywheel is refitted
remove the extension housing that the throw bearing slides on and the seal is in that housing
that front bearing can be checked also and if in doubt , overhaul the bearings in the transmission
(visible damage to the bearing cage will be evident here indicating a failing bearing)
when finished replace the clutch master cylinder if more than 5 years old since replacement
sorry not good news and it will amount to a costly exercise but there are no short cuts to a good reliable jib

    Your Altima uses a variety of different oils to lubricate various components. Normally, these oils won't leak. But when you do find a leak, you will almost always need to have extensive work done on your Altima to correct the problem. However, before you can replace anything, you need to know what kind of oil it is
    Check for brown or black oil leaking on the ground or on the side of the engine. This is engine oil. It lubricates critical engine components. A leak means that an engine seal has failed and needs to be replaced

    Check for red oil. Red oil is trans fluid. On your Altima, it most likely means that you have a rear main seal on the transmission that has failed. However, any seal on the transmission is possible. Transmission leaks need to be fixed immediately. A transmission can fail catastrophically in 20 minutes of driving if there is insufficient oil in the transmission

    Check for amber or brown oil leaking from your trans. This is transmission gear oil found only on the manual version of the Nissan Altima.

My 88 dodge dakota has a leak between the engine and the transmission. What could the problem be and how can I fix it?


If it is motor oil, it should match the oil on the dipstick.
If it is automatic transmission fluid, it should be sort of redish and match your "tranny" fluid on that dipstick.
If it is thicker than motor oil, it should be manual transmission oil.
Motor oil leaks from the "rear main seal".
Transmission fluid or gear oil leak from the front transmission seal.
All 3 of these can look like they are coming from about the same place, where you have said.
All three of these require you separate the motor and transmission to fix them, and that means taking the transmission out of your truck.
Pretty expensive if you pay to have it done.
If you take the " tranny" out, most shops will replace both seals (one front, engine and one rear, tranny)
Depending on how much it is leaking and other things, lots of people let it leak.
If you are using a lot of fluid, perhaps it\'s time to think about repairs.

Oil leak 2000 alero, just replaced plug, not it, leaked out all the oil after I drove it 20 miles, please help, could it be a gasket or what


Check the oil filter. The old gasket might be stuck on the engine (two gaskets stuck together), or the new gasket might be defective, misaligned or missing.

Transmission fluid leaking from bell housing when in gear.


If you have never done this before,it may be best to take the truck to a shop or have some one with experience help you. You will need the truck up far enough to take out the transmission. The linkage and drive shaft has to be removed,then unbolt the transmission from the bell housing.Special tools may be needed to pull and replace the seal.
Transmission fluid needs to be changed since it is a brownish color.

The oil is leaking from the gear box of my automatic transmission


what box?? gear box are described as tranny, differential and steering box. if steering is leaking check the seals at input shaft or bottom replacement is nessary but can be done pretty easy and cheap too. if leaking from hose then you looking as a hydraulic hose like $80 or so..

It sounds like you have a tranny leak. When fluid is low, you will have difficulty shifting or maintaining the gear while driving. As far as where the leak is coming from, it is hard to say just from the post, it would have to be seen to determine exactly where you are leaking from. One possibility is the seal where the input shaft goes into the transmission case. This would require the removal of the transmission in order to replace the seal.
