It was a temporary fault that put the car into limp mode (a safeguard operating condition designed to protect the transmission in case of serious failure). Sometimes a transient fault can occur, and the car goes into limp mode just to be sure it's not for real. Shutting off and restarting the car is the usual way to clear the fault and return the car to normal operation - if the problem was real, the car would've stayed in limp mode after restart, or gone into limp once you started driving again. I wouldn't sweat this one, since it went right back to normal operation.

SOURCE: 1995 GMC 2500 4x4 wont shift into 3rd or overdrive most of the times

i have heard that the ignition switch can be faulty and not let the full voltage thru to the electricaly controlled 4l60e trans.i have the same problem with my 95 1/2 t. i rigged a switched wire from the fuse block via a relay to the proper wire on the trans....ask a trany tech and they will know what im talking about,,,good luck

check for transmission codes shift solenoids could be your cause or internal leakage test line pressure a 7/16 plug on top of transmission just in front of master cylinder during shifting should not drop to zero .

check your fluid level in transmission. Also check for antifreeze in transmission , noticable on dipstick by a gray cast or antifreeze color Gr/red. Would also be locted in radiator. have you had the filter changed in trans? 60,000 miles plus would be needed to be changed if not already done . When you shut engine off the filter would drain screen and when you started it back up it would **** debris back and cause valvebody to plug again causing engine service light to come back on

Transmission issues (I think)


Use a engine scanner to pull codes, If none it sounds like the lock-up torque converter may not be disengaging at idle. Or you have a idle air control valve or TPS going bad, then repair codes by replacing failed sensor or shift control solenoid as needed. If no codes are present your transmission could have a internal failure. It's also been know that oil transmission fluid in the system will have a higher fluid retention causing the 2nd gear solenoid to stick causing the transmission to stay in second till the line pressure rises and drops back to first with a hard shift. Keep me posted be glad to get your transmission running again

a chevy mechanic suspected shift cable was worn or damaged...mine will sometimes engage..and then wont engage at all even tho shifter moves freely....
