Sounds like you are correct and the timing belt is worn. To replace the belt will cost you around $200. The Mercury Mystic and Ford Contour clone are very unreliable vehicles and my advise is to walk away. There are much better cars that you can buy in this price range.

How do you replace a timing belt on a 1999 mercury mystique with a 2.0 motor

You can register for free at, listing make, model, year, and engine size of as many vehicles as you want. Then look under "repair guides" for vehicle-specific Remove & Replacement procedures.

Usually, you strip down the front of the engine, including the front motor mount (use a jack under the engine oil pan with a block of wood between jack head and the pan, that will keep the engine from falling down). All belts must be removed, and the crank pulley or harmonic balancer also removed so the timing covers can be removed. Before removing the timing belt, you have to set the engine at TDC of the compression stroke on number 1 cylinder-the cylinder nearest front of motor. Then you can see the timing marks for the crank and cam sprocket(s), with the belt cover removed. It is an involved procedure to replace timing belts-you must follow directions exactly. Go to autozone and look at the procedure to see how involved and if you feel capable, or better yet, buy a Haynes repair manual for your Mystique, about 26 bucks.

1997 Mercury mystique the engine cooling fan will not operate

it could be the engine coolant sensors on the thermostat housing it controls the fans when they work if your sensor is out you can unplug the sensor while running the motor and if they turn on after a moment(the fans)then the sensor is bad if not make sure your fans work by jumping power to them 12volt

Replacing the belt tensioner and serpentine belt in a 1999 mercury mystique but the belt is still loose how do I get it to tighten

You either have the wrong belt, or it's not on correctly. Make sure all of the pulleys are secure. (Like the power steering pump support bracket isn't loose) The diagram for the belt is usually under the hood.

Blinkers are not working on 97 Mercury Mystique

It should be under each fuse what its for, if not if there is a cover for fuse box under cover there will be a list what each fuse is for. if you don't have that than you can use a test light with key on and test each one untill you come across one that don't light and that will be it, or you can pull them out one at a time untill you find the one thats burnt.

Timming belt

Inside of the top gear there is a hash mark, you need to turn the gear so that the hash mark is top center. (you need a second person to help you for the next step.) You then have to take the first spark plug out and stick a long screw driver inside of the hole. You then have to turn the bottom gear until the first cylinder comes all the way up. You then put the new belt on the car without moving the two gears.
