Question about 2000 Chevrolet Silverado

The oil pressure light is on, and i hear a taping or rattling noise when I crank it up. Also when I drove it around the block it doesn't have the power that it should.

    Ihave an 2000 siverado The oil pressure gage is reading a little over zero. I took it to get an oil change, and the guys up there said that I wasn't getting any oil to the top of the engine. They told me thats why the lifters are making noise. Help please!

Do not drive it again...
if you lost power you have no Oil pump. the rattle and ticking is most likly your lifters, or rocker arms tapping around because there is no oil at the top of the engine, This would be the time have the car taken to a shop before the real damage is caused. I am sorry to be the one to give you the bad news.

Hi,
You have spun a rod bearing and will need to either completely rebuild your bottom end - crank - rod bearings - rings or put a replacement engine in.
Jasper engines are best if you can afford one.

What could have happened to the oil in my car?


Oooooooo... I think that engine is GONE, Miguel... not even rebuildable, I think it's ruined.

The drain plug or oil filter may have been loose, allowing the oil to drip out, but since you didn't find any oil on the ground, that's doubtful. What's MORE likely is that you threw a rod (the rattling noise), and that rod broke a hole in the side of the crankcase and blew all your oil out the hole. If I'm right, that engine can't be salvaged... none of its internal parts are good for anything but scrap metal now.

Oil light comes on and is dinging.


The oil light has nothing to do will oil level, but rather oil PRESSURE. If the engine oil is full and there is no rattling or banging noises in the engine, chances are the oil pressure sending unit is bad. If noises accompany the light, then shut down the engine and troubleshooting the engines internal lubrication system.

If this vehicle was driven without oil, the rattle or knock you hear is more than likely a damaged main bearing or rod bearing...sounds like its time for a QUALIFIED PROFESSIONAL to listen to your engine run and give you his opinion... Good Luck!!!

The light is on because of oil pressure being low in the engine, do not drive this until the source of this low pressure is corrected. The noise you hear is engine parts lacking proper lubrication. Have this fixed ASAP or you will destroy the engines bearings, a $4000.00 repair on this car.

My Audi A4 2009 makes a rattling noise on cold starts which resolves in less than 30 seconds. Dealer says its an air pump. This doesn't seem correct. The noise comes from the front of the care. Does not...


READ THIS (happy ending so far...):
audi a4 2L turbo quattro, manual transmission with 98,000 KM. Perfect conditions, no oil leaks whatsoever.

Left the car off for two weeks in very cold weather (-10C down to -25C). When I restarted, it started immediately but with heavy rattling noise due to camshaft adjuster not getting enough oil pressure. After 3 minutes of warming up (outside temp.: -12C) at very low rpm (below 2,000rpm), I start moving the car. Still hearing heavy rattle noise. As soon as I pass 2,000 rpm, I get a scary red warning, low oil pressure. Turn off the engine immediately. In 1 minute, I re-start the car and the engine lights check ok, so I drive in first gear super slow (1,200rpm) hearing the same rattling noise. After another minute, finally the noise all the sudden disappears and the car starts running just fine.

Called Audi dealer and they told me that in extreme weather conditions, I should warm the engine for 10-15 minutes if necessary before start moving.
Take away: luckily, I didn't screw up the engine since I was using it at extremely low rpm (easy to do with clutch and manual transmission) until the oil reached full pressure. I am pretty sure now that the problem was leaving the car off for such a long time in freezing weather. All the oil flows back to the bottom, and when I restarted it, the cold oil with high viscosity took a long time to reach all the parts of the engine, specially the camshaft adjusters that are actuated by using oil pressure. Next day, the car started at -9C perfectly without making any noise (as usual). Basically, the longer you leave your audi in cold weather, the longer you might hear the rattling noise until the oil reach full pressure inside the engine. My car took 6 minutes to fix it after couple of weeks in cold weather. This makes sense to me; in fact, in the past I only heard the rattling noise after leaving the car off for a couple of days in the winter.
So far, this has had an happy ending....

If the Oil light come ON when the car is running .
It can be the oil pump or the Oil added is to Think.
I recomend ,
Go to Your Nearest auto repair garage.
Explain the problem.
And if is possible to Put an Analogo gauge to check the oil pressure.
Analogo gauge is a tool that we use to see the OIL pressure on cars.
After this procedure they will recomend or give suggestion to the problem..

The oil pressure in an engine will naturally drop off as the engine warms up. If the oil pressure is dropping too much it could be cause by several things. I don't know how many miles your engine has on it but the oil pump may be getting weak and may need to be replaced. Worn out cam bearings or crank bearings can also cause low oil pressure. Sounds like your engine may be ready for a rebuild
