Can you please better describe when problem occurs?

    Examples:
When first starting engine/when engine is warmed up/all the time

    When initially shifting into drive

When accelerating after shifting into drive

Does it happen in reverse too?

And was any recent work done?

Let me know and I'll tell you where to look next!

Have the transmission repaired or replaced. The shift arm that shifts the gears is probably broken. That is why you cannot switch gears and is making that noise.

My 1996 LE toyota corolla has a very low fuel mileage. Like it runs just 300km on 45 liters of fuel. This is a very bad mileage for 1.8L engine. Otherwise, car start, idles and runs fine. The spark plugs...

Check each wheel to determine if you have a brake dragging. If you raise a wheel off the ground, you will hear a little brake drag, but the wheel should turn pretty freely. If you find a wheel(s) that are difficult to turn, you know you need to service your brake calipers.

1996 RAV4 pops out of 5th gear but if I hold it in it fine. All other gears are fine as well. No brass or metal on gear oil

You need to pull the trans and rebuild it ( replace the shifter sleave/fork ). If it's a front wheel drive model you can pick up a cheap used one (same part as in the Corolla). Unless you do a lot of highway driving or the Toyota is otherwise in great shape, I would just drive it without 5th gear since it's so old.
