Question about 1992 Daihatsu Charade

1 Answer

My Daihatsu Charade G200 1.3L, stalls for no reason....the idle just dies away, seems when its hot, it is intermediate, sometimes this happens, sometimes not, I have to keep the revs up, through fear of it stalling....when it happens it can be hard to restart? Any ideas would be great... Greg.

Rough idle 1990

I inherited a 1990 Charade when Dad died in 2001.
Did you try a simple tune-up? Plugs, Distributor Cap, Plug Wires, Rotor Bug..?
Worse case scenario Timing Belt slipped a notch..

1. Check your water sensor and plenum temperature sensor.

2. The throttle body has a wax element air valve used for cold idle. As the water temperature increases, the wax element closes the idle fast port. Being the highest part of the coolant system you may have an air lock, which can be solved by bleeding the hoses on the throttle body.

You may find the throttle position sensor (TPS) needs adjusting or the throttle plate is gummed up and not closing completely. The other two possibilities are the coolant temp sensor and air temperature sensor.

Run a diagnostic per the following:

Daihatsu charade randomly stalling

If its the 3 cylinder I would say your points need changing/adjusting. Make sure you have grease on the lobes where the rubbing block makes contact or the rubbing block will wear rapidly and cause the gap to close. The gap between the flat and the rubbing block should be about the thickness of an hacksaw blade. The points thesleves should not have any spikey protrusions (caused by arcing).

The small metal box with vacuum hoses attached is the hot idle compensator. It's not electrical and the soot is probably just some oil that has powdered form coming in contact with petrol fumes.

You need to check the throttle stop cushion is making contact. The engine will hunt if you have air in the throttlebody coolant pipes, if the coolant sensor is faulty or if the TPS isn't calibrated.
