The recomended gear oil is 75w90 synthetic. However the capacities
increase with the size of the rear end.
8.6" 2.15qt (2.0L)
10.5+9.5" 2.75QT (2.6L)
9.75" 3QT (2.8L)
11.5" 3.17QT (3.6L)
Hope this helps.

Usually two quarts will fill it, it's full when it is level and runs out of the fill plug. (3/8" square plug) Synthetic is great to use, but expensive, but... if you have a limited slip differential, you need to put in an additive for that. It comes in a little bottle available at auto parts stores. The rear end will have a tag on it if it is. (You can smell it in the old fluid, smells real bad.)

Yes u can use a synthetic oil. You can go to a GM dealer, but the their oil is pretty pricey!!! I recomend Amsoil 80w-90 fully synthetic oil. It should take about 2 1/2 qts. The cost should be 25 to 30 bucks.

Noise coming from rear end, sounds like I'm

sonds like you may be out of lubricant or even worse pinion gear or ring gear or both could be wore out from running without lubricant. Try filling it to proper level with gear oil usually 50 weight oil but i would check specifications in owners manual. then see if noise continues. good luck.

There is a clanging noise when i put it in gear and can hear it while driving is it the rear end or universal joint

Check rear-end fluid level and play in rear pinion gear.
Check universal joints for play. If play is in pinion gear change rear end fluid and add a full bottle of LUCAS oil stabilizer, will quiet rear end noise.

How many guarts of 75/90 gear oil does a 1999 silverado 4x4 rear end take

this is going to depend on a bunch of variable, engine, ring gear size etc. Try this site, you can pick all your variables.
http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/vehiclelookup.aspx

If you don't know what size ring gear my best recommendation would be buy 4-5 quarts and then return the full one(s) that you have left. I have a 2007 chevy 2500 hd with the duramax and I think mine took just a shade under 3 quarts.
