In general, backfiring indicates the cam, crank and ignition are out of time or out of phase. The timing marks on the crank and cam just line up the timing of the cam and crank. The alignment of the spark with them has to be phased at the right time too. Check the manual for how to set the distributor timing after an engine repair

and which engine, some cars have up to 10 choices.
most are about 3 or 4.

Set camshaft timing


there should be marks on crank pully and cam belt pully. rotate motor until crank pully timing mark is on zero.the cam belt pully should be lined up with its own mark.number one piston should be at the top of its stroke (top dead centre TDC) and number one valves should be shut. if the cam belt mark is not alined with its own mark remove the belt realine the marks and refit the belt

Trying to time the cams shafts to the belt pullys there no notches only 3 bolt holes


You really need the Cam Tool that holds the Cams in place from the opposite end of the head as the Pulleys. There is also a Tool to hold the Cam Pulleys as well. IPD sells it for near $280 and that also includes the guides for the Cam Cover and a set up to evenly press the cam cover in place. The Cams will have a groove where the tool holds them and you will need to find out how they are supposed to be set. Just be happy you are not dealing with a Variable Cam Timing set up.

I changed the water pump, timing belt and idlers and set all cams as instructed, now car won't start. What did I miss?


With the engine at TDC, the small mark on the crank sprocket and intermediate shaft sprocket for the cam timing belt should be pointing at each other (also along the C/L of the center of these pulleys). Then the cam sprocket has two little arrows (triangles) opposite each other that point at the center of two holes in the sprocket. You should line up these arrows with the junction of the #1 cam tower cap and the head (you will be able to see this clearly through those holes). Then install the belt without moving any of these. Start at the crank and work to the intermediate shaft, then to the cam. There should not be any obvious slack in the belt as you do this. Finally get the belt past the tensioner, tension the belt. If you do not have the tensioner tool, then the belt is properly tensioned when you cannot rotate the belt more than 90 degrees or 1/4 turn midway between the cam and intermediate sprockets. You should turn the engine over a couple of revolutions and recheck every thing. One more method of setting the timing belt tension is that there should be approx. 5/16" of deflection from center possible midway between the cam sprocket and the crankshaft sprocket, about where the head meets the block. Also, 90 degrees twist should just be possible midway between the cam sprocket and the intermediate sprocket. I pulled this from the Haynes book.
An easy way to check your cam timing without having to look at the engine sprockets, is to turn your engine to TDC using the flywheel mark, and look at your cam sprocket. Make sure the little arrows are lined up on the cam bearing seam. I use a mirror to get a straight look at it, since your head won't fit in there :)This will ensure cam-crankshaft alignment, and the intermediate shaft alignment is not quite as critical and and be a tooth or two off since it only times the distributor, which of course can itself be rotated when you tune-up your car.NOTE: After replacing the timing belt , turn the engine over a few times by hand and recheck the tension and timing mark alignment . Get your timing light, if it has an advacne dial, set it to 12M-0, if not set the timing to 0M-0, then shine the light into the little hole in the side of the timing belt cover. You should see a hole in the cam sprocket in there, if it's in the middle of the hole, cam timing is OK, if it's towards the front, it's advanced, towards the back, it's ******** a tooth. The timing belt is adjusted by a counter weight tool. Just the weight of the tool is all the tension you need. I check with a tool rental or parts store to see if you can rent one. There is very little tension on the belt, to much and it makes noise and to little and belt will jump. So if you can, find the tool.

How do i set the valve timing if i cant see the timing marks on a VW 1.8 20valve golf cylinder head timing chain , i can only find the one on the belt side i have put the cam on TDC for the ex-valve but...


The 2 cams are linked with a chain at the rear of the cylinder head.

The cams need to be set so the slots on the chain sprockets line up with the cam tower caps with 16 links between cam caps.

You cannot see the front crank pulley tdc mark so you need to lock the engine at tdc with a screwdriver jammed into the timing hole on the bell housing after setting engine at tdc or use a DTI
to check to tdc in the #1 spark plug hole.

If the cams have not been disturbed you only need to set the belt cam sprocket to the mark and crank to tdc.....all this means pulling the core support into the service position so the belt tensioner can be locked down and/or doing a complete belt job along with a coolant pump if over 70,000 miles..

I have a 1998 Dodge Stratus ES and am having problems getting the timeing belt on. Can somebody please explain how we may put the belt back on without a bunch of trouble?


Make sure your timing marks are lined up and start putting your belt on the rear cam first that would be 1,3,5 cam. Then route it under the water pump and up around the front cam 2,4,6 cam being careful the rear cam don't jump off it's mark. Keep tension on the belt while routing it. Continue routing it over the idler pulley keeping tension on it route it down and around the crank sprocket. Now set your tension pulley and replace the tension pin. Once the belt is set hand crank the engine 2 to 3 complete cycles then recheck your marks. This is for a 2.5 engine. Good luck hope this helps.

You need to find the timing marks on both crank and cam pulleys, set it, then take of the belt ane dont let any pulley move! Put on new belt and set the tension of the belt.
