Question about 1997 Pontiac Bonneville

1 Answer

My (automatic) headlights and dashboard lights go out (click off) after driving for about 5 - 10 minutes (at night). It reverts just to the daylight running lights. I pull the lightswitch on and everything then is normal - headlights come on and dash lights on as well. Obviously not a fuse - is this a relay problem and where is the relay?

There should be a module, most likely behind the light switch, not sure on location.

The sensor is normally on top of the dashboard in front of the driver. Make sure you have nothing on top of the dashboard, nor are using a dashboard cover. The sensor is small, but should look like a little clear lens mounted into the dashboard.

All exterior lights are on when engine is started and wont turn off until engine is off, could it be the switch itself?

Is this happening all the time or just at night? The car is equipped with automatic daytime running lights which automatically turns on the full lighting system at dusk and off at dawn or other lowered daylight situations. Do you have something on the dashboard covering the daytime running light sensor? Is the headlight switch turned to the off position?

The headlights do not activate automatically, in the auto mode, at night or with minimal daylight. However the running lights will activate in the auto mode. A new dash light switch was installed without...

The light sensor to control the automatic headlamps is located on the dashboard. This sensor is suppose to activate running and headlamps. I would suspect the problem is a relay to operate the headlamps if the car uses a seperate relay in the automatic mode. I'm assuming the headlamps work in manual on/off. FYI... The auto mode does not control the fog lamps.

This is normal operation. The XL-7 has daytime running lights and automatic headlight controls. You can keep headlights off when starting by applying the handbrake. If / when the daylight sensor on the dash determines it is evening and turns on the headlights, they will come on regardless of the handbrake position; and obviously, if you want to move the car, you have to release the handbrake (and headlights come one).

Problem with Automatic Daytime Running Lights

Have you verified both high beams are in working order? DRL's are very funny about not working if one of the lights is burned out. Rememeber that DRL's are only high beams using 20% of the power so just because your normal lights work, it does not mean the high beams are working correctly.
