Hello. If the car won't start, and the gears won't shift you have a couple of issues that will require the skills and tools of a pro. As far as what the problem actually is, there are a number of possibilities, some minor and some quite major in nature. Call at least three repair shops that are trusted in your area. Get estimates if possible. IF you are an Auto Club member, AAA, you can call them as they will give you a free jump, or a tow to the garage as part of that membership. Good luck with it. Joe

Hello again. Since your car won't shift you need to have the transmission checked and tweeked. I recommend AAMCO for that if you have one nearby. When it won't start, you have to check the battery, the charging system, the fuel pump. Joe

Stopped at drive way went to put in park nothing went all the way to 1st gear will not come back to park or any other gear shifter moves freely, you think its a broken cable

It could be a broken cable or chipped gears in transmission. I had a car that got stuck in 3rd gear and it was caused by a chipped gear in transmission.

Car only starts in neutral?

I was first going to say the problem is the neutral safety switch, but based on what you said about it being stuck in drive and the shifter can be moved around, I would say the cable is broke or a connector on either end of the cable. The cable connects the shifter with the shift lever on the side of the transmission.
The shift lever is probably under the master cylinder on the driver side.

Buick Century 2000 gear shifter moves freely will not start

Sounds like your shift cable came unhooked or just plain Broke, it hooks to shifter and hooks to transmission, If it moves freely I would say it's Broken, and that is why car won't start cause it is still in drive

I was backing up in a driveway one cold night, and as i tried to shift into drive it stuck on drive 3. I tried to move it back and it just wouldn't budge. I pulled infront of my boyfriends house and tried...

You may be able to stop and start the car in neutral using the parking brake. I'm not sure on the 2004. I would check the linkage and linkage cable first. It may be a much easier fix than you think. What gear does the indicator show you and is the shifter on the floor or on the column? I would still try to have someone go under the car and see if they can move the linkage manually to park.

Give the shifter a good hard hit on the top. Sometimes it pops out of place.
