Question about 2003 Pontiac Grand Am

1 Answer

Car is running hot and I can smell gas fumes. Has no power going up a hill. I also hear a screaching sound. Checked the main belt but don;t see any problems. Could the idler pulley have something to do with this. FUMES ARE bad. No power!! 2003 Grand Am GT 126,000 miles.

Remove belt and and check to see if water pump turns freely. It sounds like the water pump is not wanting to turn and that is causing the overheating and screaching sound. That could also cause loss of power.

Inspect your car immediately. Leaking gasoline is a fire hazard, especially check the seals on the fuel injectors.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 1999 ford contour...running horrible...missing...no power...chug chug chug...engine lighrt on..only code it is throwing is for the egr valve...when you have to excelerate up a hill it has no

EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve may be stopped up with carbons. This would account for some loss of power as well as odor if leaking around intake. If I remember correctly, egr tube originates just above catalytic converter on this model. Condition may be early signs of cat failure ( commonly accompanied by "rotten egg" odor). I recommend having emission system checked by certified tech to avoid uneccessary component replacement.

COULD BE WATER PUMP,? COULD BE THERMOSTATE,? YOU NEED TO GET THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT DIAGNOISED, AND THAT WILL PROLLY TELL YOU A GOOD IDEA, AND MAKE SURE THAT THE BELT IS ON RIGHT AND TIGHT ENOUGH, ( CHECK TENSIONER) AND AS FOR THE OIL NOT STAYING IN YOU NEED TO TAKE TO A SHOP AND HAVE THEM TELL YOU WERE ITS COMING FROM AND GET IT FIXED,

the rotten egg smell is a catalytic convertor going bad. here are a few symtoms.--- you should notice a drop in power and also a higher running temperature, also at night you may notice a slight glow from this thing if its heating up,it will also loose power ,on any kind of a hill or small incline it may idle rough from time to time also, there are several warning signs of one going bad ,if your in doubt about it,you can have it checked, they can drill a hole in it and check the back pressure on it,this will tell you if its going bad, this is actually the best way to check it out. have a good day !!

Well you mechanic has obviously not done his job , on some cars there is a vent tube that runs ajacent to the main filler tube there may be a breach in the rubber hose or where it connects, but more than likely the purge canister located in the engine compartment is faulty not allowing the gas tank to vent, have the purge canister checked.

Gas fumes inside and out side the car when it is hot outside

Try having the area that the hose was disconnected from steamed cleaned, or go to a car wash wash and spray the area. It might help, that is if you already haven't done so.
