Sitting for two years w/ no oil in the auto trans.!!! You know what is in there rust rust and more rust. The clutch packs have probably long since rusted into one big fused together block. I would stay as far away from that car as you can get. But if you insist on buying a 24yr old car that has been sitting dry for 2 years. Start w/ 3qt ATF and 1 small (24oz) bottle of Lucas trans. treatment and a whole lot of prayer.

Start the car, move the shift selector through each of it's positions and back to park. Then check the fluid level and top off as needed. Remember to make sure you are checking the level at the marks for COLD on the dip stick since sitting there idling will take over 20 min for the trans fluid to get up to temp. Good luck, your gonna need it ; )

Sat dry for 2 years - Oil or Money??

Get your biggest barge pole and don't go near that car without it!

Unless you have the time, experience and money to expend to get it going again?

At that age the Jag's weren't built like they are now (metal alloys, etc..) I would suspect that if you tried to run it, you would need a new gearbox within 2000 miles.

How many miles will you get out of the v12 motor in a 1989 xjs? Im looking to buy one but it has 250000km on the clock

I would get complete set of maintenance records for that one. 250k is alot for a jag especially a V12. That one is either running on borrowed time or has been meticulously taken care of.

1989 XJS V12 furl problem

Obviously, fuel and oil should never be in the same spot at the same time. You have a dead cylinder and maybe a stuck-open injector. The black smoke is from a too-rich fuel mix, so the cheap things to look for are in the fuel injection system. Look at the fuel pressure regulator as well. Good luck, and don't forget to relieve the fuel pressure before you do any work on fuel inj. engines!
