Check for a 5 volt reference signal at the wiring to the knock sensor. With key on engine off one of the wires to the sensor should have 5 volts.

The Knock sensor on a 22re is located under the intake manifold on the engine block. to the upper left of the oil filter. With is the passenger side of the engine. I believe it is yellow in color. Not do be confused with the oil pressure sensor which is close by. The knock sensor has a larger electrical connector. Good luck it can be hard to get to.

SOURCE: Knock sensor location
if its a cmfi or csefi injection system theres 2 knock sensors 1 on each side of engine block,1 under the left bank of block, the other under right bank of block, tbi inj. theres 1 in front of starter.

These knock sensors are hard to get into. If thats a V6 it is underneath the intake manifold. make sure you cover the intake port when you take it apart, so a screw or a bolt don't accidentally drops in there.

I am having the same problem. I was able to get the twelve code to come up after actually turning on the ignition and attaching the code scanner. It flashes 1 repeatedly after that, so I'm really not making any progress either.
