Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

A foul smell in my 1998 Jetta

My Jetta has a foul smell that comes inside through the vent whether is the heat or the cool air. Also when I open the hood I can smell it. Seems to me it's the antifrezze, but it's not losing coolant, at least not since I got it flushed and replaced a broken hose. Curiously, when I got it from the mechanic, after he fixed the hose, it was not smelling for a couple of days. but then the smell returned. I checked the exhaust pipe to see if any white smoke is coming, but non is. I don't see any other external leak, but I'm afraid it might be internal. no check engine light comes on either. Any ideas as to what might be going on?

The heater core could be leaking, possibly a small leak or a cracked pipe to the heater core. I would check around under the passenger side dash, for the smell or any small amounts of anti-freeze.

SOURCE: A foul smell in my 1998 Jetta: fear of inernal leak

it sounds like u might have a heater core leak, did they check that? it only takes a tiny bit of coolant evaporating from the heater core to really smell.

Why am I getting cool air conditioned air out of drivers side, and hot air out of passenger side (want cool ac on passenger side also).

There are 2possibles ,1. The heat / cool slide control is defective, it is not possible to repair. Most likely the servo motor that opens and closes the air vent that gives you heat or cool is stuck. Open your glove box and you will see 2 rubber tabs that hold the door at the open and down position. Push down on your glove box door until it swings all the way down (this wil be past normal open) up inside you will see a metal rod affixed to a arm that pivots via the servo left is full vent(cool) right is full heat. Push your hot/cold heat selector and see if it moves. It may not be moving its full extension. If your not sure push it right and you should get heat push it left and you should get cool check YouTube this is a common problem for this era of Buicks, good luck Bret

You have a leak in your heate core, located behind the dash on the passenger side. Common problem, I have the same vehicle and had the same problem. Parts not that expensive, but many hours of labor. Dash has to be removed from vehicle!

something near the a/c vent (under your hood) started to burn or burnt something stuck in there like leaves or plastic etc. check your lines and fuels, make sure nothing's leaking or dried up.

Cabin smells when heat or defroster is on

What your smelling is most likely coolant (antifreeze). You may have a heater core leak. If you dont smell the same smell after running the A/C or just vented cool air from outside for a few minutes then that is your problem.
