SOURCE: 2004 Mazda 3i 2.0L -- Intake Manifold

I have had the same problem at almost exaclty the same milage. 2004 Mazda 3 3 door hatchback (5 door sedan). I was told by the service manager that there is a valve in the manifold that fails and starts flapping, sounded just like a collapsed lifter. I think this should be covered under warranty. If not the mfg warranty the emissions? .. good luck.

After check engine light on analysis probable causes indicated #1 missfire, EGR problems, car feels like out of power when step on gas, then it goes but missing here and there

I had a misfire problem with my 2004 mazda 6. mine was the V6 and it was the #5 that was misfiring. i cant imagine what the loss of power feels like if the #1 is misfiring, but i replaced my ignition coil. I cant be too sure what the 4 cyl engine block looks like, but if you have the v6, its gonna take some time to replace because youll have to remove the air intake manifold thing on top of the engine block to get to the #1, #2, #3 pistons.
good luck!

2004 mazda 6 3.0L changing spark plugs. can get to the first 3 with no problem. back 3 are under the intake manifold. understand i have to take this off, but which bolts? there are several and all seem to...

Loosen the vacuum hoses but do not remove the vacuum hoses. Carefully remove the manifold and set it on the side of the engine. If a gasket gets turned in the process, replace it with a new one when you put things back together. These gaskets are hard to find in auto parts stores, so you may have to find them at a Mazda dealership. Use an 8mm socket with extension to completely loosen all 8 bolts. These bolts stay locked in the IM, they do not come out or fall out.

04 mazda 6 lean condition

sounds like you have a vacuum leak. It is sucking in extra air from somewhere. possibly the intake manifold gaskets. The extra air coming in fools the computer / o2 sensors to believe it has a lean mixture then it will try to compensate for the lean mixture and add more fuel.
