Question about 1998 GMC Jimmy

1 Answer

1998 GMC Jimmy...4x4 / transmission issues. It started a few weeks ago with poor acceleration above 2500-3000 rpm in any gear. The engine doesn't red line, but it the truck doesn't feel like it is accelerating either. In the last few days, the switch for the 4x4 has been faulty...The light, which is usually on 2WD, is off. When it is on, I am unable to select 4Hi nor 4Low...the buttons do nothing. Also, a hum/subtle vibration under my feet has started when driving between 35 and 45 mph...regardless of engine speed. Any thoughts?!

I think that is just starting to slip, but not sure because the engine does not rev up as if it is in neutral...plus the 4x4 switch issue which would be quite a coincidence to happen at the same time.

I am driving the truck daily.

I decided to try some snake oil and put in the $12 bottle of Lucas Tranny fix...it seems to have helped, but I hope it is just not a placebo effect.

So the SWITCH is most likely bad? I found some for only $25 or so, seems like it is worth it to see if it helps.

Well, I bought a new dash switch and nothing changed; the buttons don't seem to do anything. I am going to take it to a transmission shop in hopes that somehow all these issues (failure of button to shift in/out of 4WD, hum at certain speeds and acceleration issues) are somehow related. I recently had some vacuum line issues with the truck, and know that the 4x4 has some vacuum activation. Could that be a possible source of some/all of these issues?

Lets take this piece by piece.
The 4x4 switch is defective.
A driveline vibration regardless of engine speed is usually a shaft or cv joint. To verify a visual inspection is necessary.
The poor acceleration in any gear is the begining of torque converter problems( stator or pump). As long as ATF level is correct.
I recommend having a transmission repair shop look this over and preform a pressure test of the main line of the transmission.(it may not be necessary if the condition of ATF is burnt). Good luck

If your slipping no matter what you put in there is a waste of time . tramsmissions slip because the stator disengages too soon and the engine 's torque is not pasted onto the transmission. Bring the vehicle to a transmission repair shop ... and have them do the switch also.

My rpm are going up and down while driving.

This sounds normal to me. Why do you think there is a problem? If the RPM's are going up and down during acceleration, then I would say there is some sort of slippage. Have the transmission looked at for signs of trouble. Also, check the transmission fluid level for the correct amount. If it is low, find out why it is leaking. Gasket leak?

It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.

It may be the transmission input shaft bushing or bearing, located in the rear of the engine crankshaft, in front of the clutch assembly. If the bushing or bearing is dry (needs to be greased), the input shaft will still try to turn with the engine rpm, even though the clutch pedal is depressed. Also, the clutch disc may not be fully releasing, which could possibly be corrected by adjusting the clutch pedal linkage. good luck

If it's a manual transmission, it's the bushings under the gear shift that a beat out of it. If it's an automatic, check you fluid level and filter. It may not be able to build enough pressure in the tranny if the filter is clogged or isn't enough fluid.
