Question about 1987 Dodge Shadow

Engine shuts off

The engine just shuts off while I'm driving. It will fire right back up & drive for a while & then shuts off again. This only happens after I've driven it far enough for it to warm up and I shut it off. When I re-start it alter is when the problem occurs.

It's a 93 Shadow with a 2.5 ltr.

Thank you

No. It will re start immediatly

  • pbrgrd Apr 30, 2010

It only happens when the engine is still warm. If I let it set overnight it doesn't happen until I start it with the engine warm

It sounds like the coil

Do this.
I want you to get a can of intake cleaner (ABOUT $5.00) from any local auto parts store like NAPA or Carquest, do not use carburetor spray, intake cleaner only or u will damage the Teflon coating inside the throttle valve and air bypass valve, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

Many cars have the cooling fan on a thermostat or time delay, to allow it to run for a short period of time after the engine turns off, to cool the engine off. You may have just never noticed it before. So I wouldn't worry about that.
Your real problem is the blowing fuses, apparently you have a short somewhere in your wiring. Putting in bigger and bigger fuses is a great way to set fire to your wiring harness. It's possible that the wire is pinched or chafed somewhere, and perhaps when you hit a bump just right, it touches and shorts.
You may have to take this to the Chevy dealer or a GOOD independent shop to have them chase it down. Unless someone out there knows exactly what this is, it could be a tough one to find.

Eng. dies while driving and starts running again

Crank position sensor. If it's a 4.0 its on the bellhousing flange at the back of the block right where block meets trans. It senses the cranks rotation to fire plugs and other stuff. If it goes open when hot or from vibrational fatigue (don't let anyone B.S. you they go bad ALOT!) engine management thinks the engine has stopped and shuts everything down, when engine shuts down the absense of vibration complete it's circuit again and it continues running till it gets in the mood again.Had one of these that made a 250mi.trip then dies and would restart after about 5 min
