T make sure that it the module you need to see if you have any spark or not what you can do is pull a spark plug out plug the spark plug wire to it put it in a place where you can see it or have some one assist you turn the car over like trying to start it if you see a good spark from the plug then its usually another problem if the spark is weak then yes id try a module . if all of this is ok then id try a cam posistion sensor. one of these should solve your problem.

1987 f 150 6 cyl starts and runs till hot then wont till cooled off

Probably a bad ignition coil or a bad TFI module (the ignition control module). Much testing could be done to find the faulty part, but I believe if you take the TFI module to a parts store, it could be tested.

Whats the purpose of how the ignition module works or how you know it is bad

Ignition module is controlled by the engine computer and controls how the spark is timed to engine performance.

A bad module would not produce spark at the plugs.

It starts and runs for a while, and then randomly dies and wont start, but starts again after sitting a few hours

That is the classic symptom of an electronic component overheating, and it could be a problem with the fuel pump, the ignition module inside of the distributor could be faulty, or the ECM (Engine Control Module) could be faulty, and the ECM's that were manufactured back then were prone to faults, and that is also why they can be purchased for only around $70.00 at most auto part stores.

The ignition module located inside of the distributor is what generates the signal that the ECM (Engine Control Module) uses to time and fire the fuel injectors, as well as the signal to run the fuel pump and the dwell signal timing to fire the ignition coil. A faulty ignition module can cause any one of these systems to malfunction.

That does sound like a malfunction with the ignition module inside of the distributor, and you can remove the ignition module and have it tested for free at most auto part stores.

If you do purchase a new ignition module be sure that it does come with a silicone grease or a die-electric compound because it is a heat sink and the ignition module will burn up without it.

To install the new ignition module first clean out the mounting surface inside of the distributor. Then completely coat the metal contact surface under the ignition module with a thick coat the silicone grease or die-electric compound and do not leave any of the metal contact surface of the ignition module un-coated with the silicone grease or die-electric compound, and be very careful not to over-tighten the ignition module or it will be damaged.

1991 mazda mx6 start ,runs for 15 minutes then shuts off and wont start for a hour later i changed ignition coil ,cap n rotor but no luck

This Sounds Axactly Like A INTERMITTEN IGNITION CONTROL MODULE Problem.
Check for SPARK While The NO START CONDITION is IN EFFECT and if NO SPARK
Replace IGNITION CANTROL MODULE
BUT If you DO Have SPARK then Go to the Fuel System and Start at the FUEL PUMP and EUS a PRESSURE GAGE to Check for PROPER FUEL PRESSURE, Also Fuel FILTER Could be A Candidate NOT VERY LIKELYBut Still Still May at Liest CONTRIBUTE to this Condition. But My Experience POINTS at The Ignition Control Module
