The primary O2 is located in the exhaust manifold, before the catalytic conveter and looks like this;

Where is the primary o2 - b1e170d.jpg If I remember correctly, it is only reachable from under the vehicle. A quick search of the exhaust system will tell if you can remove from the top or bottom.

    Your right, that is odd....Was the old o2 the same size and shape as the new one? I'm guessing yes, but my next question is, why are we replacing the o2 sensor?

98 chev 3.1L runs rough and dies at idle

Check the DIS module or injectors. Check to make sure you have a spark on each cylinder. One cylinder could be misfiring

Cant find the o2 sensor system 2.

Actually, you have two oxygen sensors: primary is in the exhaust manifold(under hood, center, lower engine area, above exhaust pipe flange, mounted in exhaust manifold) and the secondary is in the catalytic converter.
Since the sensor has a electrical wire on it to connect it to its connector, you will need a special wrench to remove it; they can be rented, I believe, at Autozone. Also, they tend to be quite difficult to get started for removal since they are in a manifold that gets very hot then cools down again and again.
Hope this helps you.

O2 sensor

That signal is provided by the computer, check wiring for continuity/short if no short is found the only other source is the computer. Good Luck

In a Saturn SL2 1998, I have the check engine soon light on. The codes readings show P0133 and P0422.

P0133 is an oxygen sensor "response too slow" code (meaning it's not getting up to temperature quickly enough, and the computer is assuming damage to its heating element). P0422 is a catalytic converter problem indication (cat is below peak efficiency). It's assuming you have a failure with the primary O2 sensor and that the cat is also bad. Change your O2 sensor first, have the codes cleared, and see if the cat code comes back or if the O2 sensor change fixes both issues.
