Question about 1990 Ford F150

1 Answer

Engine starts, then dies off like fuel was cut off. Or when engine starts and stays on, it dies off a few minutes later. When engine does start, I can drive it but it hesitates during the drive forcing me to drive with my left leg on the brake and the other on the gas, holding the gas pedal down with high idle, while braking at the same time. Can you help?

Sputtered out and now it won't stay running; dies when put in gear.

Mass air flow , crank sensor . I wouldn't discount anything . Having a scan tool that can view engine sensor data would be a great help too , testing fuel pressure and flow and back pressure test the exhaust .

My 1993 nissan sentra 1.6 wont run and check engine light wont turn on,bulb is ok

Could be any of several things. If the crank sensor is marginal and not sending pulses, the fuel pump is shut off. This is for safety. The pump is energized for a few seconds as key is turned in preparation for starting then engine must rotate normally to keep the pump on. If it stops, in a few seconds the fuel is cut off.

My 1995 jimmy start die over and over

Josh, same problem with my suburban, very frustrating. Two issues to check.
Underneath your distributor cap and ECM module there is the pickup coil. The reluctor is most likely corroded really bad. It is about one hour work but you would be surprised how dirty and corroded that area gets. The reluctor is a fixed part of the distributor shaft and the little nubs break magnetic field which is
processed by your onboard computer. If the pulses are not correct the computer is telling your TBI injectors to spray which will flood out your engine. Ten of fifteen minutes later, it will start up again and then die shortly after. Have a new pick up coil on hand too ($10.00) since your in there. My reluctor looked like it was in Vavy Jones locker it was so crusty. Second- the fuel relay. Nororious for developing little cracks on the mini circuit breaker which get wider as voltage and amps increase due to resistance (dirt, moisture). The relay will shut off the fuel pump if the oil pressure signal gets cut, and if your breaker/circuit board is
bad the board heats up and trips off your fuel. When the board cools off in ten or fifteen minutes, starts up and then dies when engine gets warm/hot. It really had me stumped for quite some time. Hope ths cuts your wrench time down considerably.

I have a 1994 toyota camry and while driving the engine dies off, then after i stop a few minutes later it starts then i can drive off again

It does sound like fuel pressure is low or intermittent. Here are some check procedures p172 on

Is the check engine light showing a trouble code on the instrument panel? That may pin the trouble down.

What is wrong when your car starts up then dies a min. later? The battery and the brake light came on.

Seems like your electrical are firing up. So It's 90% with your fuel system, would have to say, a clogged fuel filter, if you havn't replace it recently, or clogged injectors. Cars start and dies later usually because fuel isn't getting to your engine due to not getting enought fuel, or cut off. When engine is turn of, fuel pressure builds up agian and thats why you are able to run it for a fuel seconds, but somethings clogged and then loose pressure and then engine dies. Try some fuel injector cleaner, and replace your fuel filter.

Hello You will have to reset your fuel pump switch located passenger side right foot kick panel when you press it it should stay down if this does not work your probably looking at a fuel pump not working.

You need to have someone with a scantool check the sensors. I've had coolant temp sensors read -43F which tells the computer to dump more gas essentially flooding the engine.

i would check your ignition system. you would need a meter for this but look for broke or loose connections. if it was a fuel problem i dont think it would just start up after 20 minutes. or you might try your ignition switch. if its shorting or something then ya well it would cut your engine off real quick
