The coolant is working well, because the engine stays cool while driving. The problem is the fan relay, fuse, or the fan itself. Do you have AC? If so, turn it on and you should have instant running of the fan. The normal operation of the fan is: the engine thermal sensor tells the computer that it is getting hot which in turn tells the fan relay to turn on and that is supposed to turn on the fan itself. The fuse protects the high current wire to the fan. Try to turn the fan blades by hand--if stuck or very hard to turn, replace the fan motor. If you can't find the fan relay in the fuse compartment, it may be a solid-state device that is located near the fan motor. Chase the fan wiring back to the relay. Hope this helps!

My car heats up in stop n go traffic. The temperature gauge can go as high as to the 'RED'. I adding water and coolant everyday. Are the fans supposed to come on as I am driving and the car heats up?

if you are adding coolant every day then you are experiencing coolant loss
could be from a leaking pump gasket , head gasket or other leaking item
have a compression test done to check for head gasket , cracked head
next have the cooling system pressure tested to find the cooling leak
lastly check the fan, fan relay , fuses and coolant temp sensor unit for correct operation

Should the cooling fan stay on constantly?

No.

If the cooling fan stays on permanently when driving it means that your engine is overheating - and you would notice the heat!

Check your coolant level though.

It's probably the (faulty) switch that kicks in when the engine gets to a certain temperature .. like when idling along in heavy traffic .. and not switching off when the temperature drops.

An easy fix, assuming all is okay with your coolant system/cylinder head.

Give a mobile mechanic a call. These guys are good and cheaper than a workshop call out.

HELP!!! I have a 1997 Honda accord, after about 45 minutes of driving it will over heat when i come to a stop buy as soon as i start driving it will cool down. Then when i park the car ill pop my hood and...

My first thought is not enough air or coolant flow at idle.
I would check air flow thru the radiator and coolant flow from the water pump. Are you sure the cooling fan is coming on at 220 degrees ?

2005 Saturn relay has intermittent heat. You have to adjust all dials many times until heat kicks in. Once heat works, its plenty warm. The frustrating part is it is so random. Have read about blend...

Sounds like it is low on coolant. Add coolant, drive the car, let it cool down, and then repeat the problem until the coolant level stays constant in the coolant tank. If it doesn't stay constant after a few tries, there may be a coolant leak inside the engine (blown head gasket or intake gaskets).

My temperature gauge is normal when driving, when stopped it moves towards hot. Car takes a while to warm up.

You need to make sure there is engine coolant in your vehicle. Also, make sure your cooling fans are kicking on. If they are and you have enough coolant, you might have a problem with your radiator.

1998 cavalier heats up when idleing. Fan comes on but still heats

Hello senior, whenever the coolant system is opened up there's a possibility you could get air in your system, only way to get it out is by using the bleeder valve, check the coolant temperature sensor it may not be working properly, it tell's the cooling fan when to kick on and off, the condition of the drive belt is also another factor, along with the tensioner and tensioner pulley. it sounds like a problem with the water pump, the cooling fan, or air in your cooling system, to get a good inspection of the water pump fin's you have to remove it.

I would suggest checking to make sure your electric fan(s) are turning on. When you are moving they may be enough air flowing through the radiator to cool it enough not to run extremely hot, but as soon as you stop and the air stops it heats up. Check the fan(s) to see if they turning on. If not, check the fuse block ad see if the fuse or relay for the fan is bad. Hope this helps.
