Question about 2001 Jeep Cherokee

2 Answers

2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport - sometimes sputters and has no power at start up. Sometimes the check engine light comes on. I had the code checked and it said 3 rd cylinder failed to fire. I imagine it could have a different cylinder each time or it could always be #3. I have changed the coil packs (the plug wires and coils are in a single self contained unit) as well as the spark plugs. I thought thi would fix it no luck. It still does it sometimes. Any thoughts?

Known issues for Carbon build up in the cylinders. Try running STP or similar injector cleaner in your fuel tank.

Make sure the fuel injector wire on #3 is connected tightly. Also some cars have a cold idle sensor that may be faulting out.

Check to make sure your intake system does not have any leaks in it that is allowing extra air to come in past the MAF sensor.

My 1996 Jeep Cherokee has problems starting. sometimes it sounds as if it is going to start but it shuts down. other times you can keep cranking but it doesn't start. the fuel pump works fine. what...

this could be the crank position or cam position sensors. Also antitheft device if installed

If check engine light is on do a self test.

turn key off-on, off-on, off-on. the check engine light will blink out codes in pairs of numbers; 5-5 being the end of the test. Or the codes will display on a digital odometer. Do not start the car when doing the test- just turn key until the dash lights come on then one click back for "off".

Google your findings, if any, for possible solutions.

could be the o2 sensor, check with a hand scanner if there are any trouble codes stored in the computer.

Indicator light

The light is the check engine light, it tells you there is a problem with the emission system for the engine, you can take it to Kragen auto and they can test it for trouble codes for free, when you have those codes post them here, and I will try to help you figure out the problem. It's ok to drive it.
