SOURCE: rear axle leaking

Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes, return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while, being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi, then same procedure, minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out, take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart, you'll be glad you did.

Screws into the base of the housing just above where the oil filter goes on. You can identify it by the wire going to it.

I have a 99 Ford F150 with a 5.4. It will start and run fine, no codes. After 2 minutes of running the oil pressure goes to zero. Shut off the engine and restart the oil pressure will go up to normal for...

Start by verifying the oil pressure sending unit. It is quite common for a bad sensor to act erratically, such as you have described. Acquire an oil pressure gauge and install it in an appropriate location, perhaps in place of the oil sending unit if a more convenient location is not available, and run the engine. Observe the pressure on the test gauge at various RPM and over a period of several minutes as the engine warms. If pressure on the gauge is good, then you have a problem either with the oil pressure sending unit, in the circuitry, or instrument panel gauge. However, the problem is most likely the sending unit. Note: the sending unit often requires a special socket, which may be obtained at any auto parts store. Also, if you don't own a test gauge or unwilling to purchase, many auto parts stores now rent tools, others even loan tools provided an adequate security deposit is made.

I keep losing oil pressure in my 2004 f150 with a 4.6 litre. I have changed the filter and oil. What is the chance that the oil pump is bad? If so is it located inside the oil pan? Can I change the pump...

Ok 3 questions to answer:

1 yes the pump could be bad, but it is not likely.
2 yes it is in the oil pan.
3 yes you can change it without pulling the engine, though it is not easy.

Most common problem for your oil pressure reading to be going away, is the oil pressure sending unit(sensor) it is located next to the oil filter, check and replace if neccessary this sensor first and see if your oil pressure returns to normal. If not then you may have a pump problem. Hope this helps, let me know.

Oil pressure gauge shows low / high / middle changed sensor did

Hello mb4494: My name is Roger and I will help you. If by changing the oil pressure sending unit the problem did not change. I would perform a oil pressure test. This is done by removing the oil pressure sensor and inserting a oil pressure gauge. This can be done by yourself or by a repair shop. This needs to be done on a cold engine. Start the engine and observe the oil pressure cold.as the engine warms up observe the pressure. The pressure will drop off as the engine warms up.Should the oil pressure drop below 10 to 12 PSI. then you have internal engine trouble. More then likely a bearing problem. Try dropping the truck into gear and see what the pressure drops off to. Again if the pressure drops below 10 to 12 PSI. you have a problem. I would also check to make sure you have the correct oil switch. a truck with a oil light uses a oil pressure switch. with a gauge you would use a oil pressure sending unit. Sorry for the long reply but want to make sure you check the pressure correctly. Please rate the quality of the answer as this is how we know the answer was correct. Thank You for using Fix Ya.
