I NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING FLUID SPLASHES IN THE RESERVOIR AND I HAVE ENGINE VIBRATION AT IDLE AND UP TO 3.000 R/M. HAS IT TO DO WITH P/S PRESSURE SWITCH ON THE PUMP?

Hi:
It is doubtful that the power steering pump is the cause of your vibration, but to find out for sure, remove your serpentine belt, and start up the truck and run it briefly without the belt to see if the vibration goes away. If so, you know that it is caused by a belt driven accessory..Then you can individually check the power steering pump, the alternator, and the AC compressor if you have one.

If you can't find a power steering fluid reservoir under the hood in the engine compartment your G6 could have Electronic Power Steering . If you look up under the dash below the steering column you will see a electric motor mounted to the steering column !
The power steering system reduces the amount of effort needed to steer the vehicle. The system uses the powertrain control module (PCM), body control module (BCM), power steering control module (PSCM), discrete battery voltage supply circuit, steering shaft torque sensor, steering wheel position sensor, power steering motor, driver information center (DIC), and the serial data circuit to perform the system functions. The PSCM and the power steering motor are serviced as an assembly and are serviced separately from the steering column assembly. The steering shaft torque sensor and the steering wheel position sensor are not serviced separately from each other or from the steering column assembly. The steering column assembly does not include the power steering motor and module assembly.

SERVICE PROCEDURE: THE POWER STEERING FLUID REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE IS A TWO-STAGE PROCESS: FIRST, FLUSHING THE OLD FLUID FROM THE SYSTEM WITH NEW FLUID; AND SECOND, BLEEDING THE SYSTEM TO REMOVE ANY TRAPPED AIR. THE FOLLOWING TWO SEQUENCES OUTLINE THE STEPS IN EACH PROCEDURE.

FLUSHING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM 1. RAISE THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE OFF THE GROUND UNTIL THE WHEELS ARE FREE TO TURN.

2. REMOVE THE FLUID RETURN LINE AT THE PUMP RESERVOIR INLET CONNECTOR.

3. PLUG THE INLET CONNECTOR PORT ON THE PUMP RESERVOIR.

4. POSITION THE FLUID RETURN LINE TOWARD A LARGE CONTAINER IN ORDER TO CATCH THE DRAINING FLUID.

5. WHILE A SECOND PERSON FILLS THE RESERVOIR WITH NEW LOW TEMPERATURE CLIMATE SERVICE FLUID, START AND RUN THE ENGINE AT IDLE.

6. TURN THE STEERING WHEEL FROM STOP TO STOP.

NOTICE: DO NOT HOLD THE WHEEL AGAINST STOPS WHILE FLUSHING THE SYSTEM. HOLDING STEERING WHEEL AGAINST WHEEL STOPS WILL CAUSE HIGH SYSTEM PRESSURE, OVERHEATING, AND DAMAGE TO THE PUMP AND/OR GEAR. 7. CONTINUE DRAINING UNTIL ALL OF THE OLD FLUID IS CLEARED FROM THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. ADDITION OF APPROXIMATELY 1 QUART OF NEW FLUID WILL BE REQUIRED TO FLUSH SYSTEM.

8. UNPLUG PUMP RESERVOIR INLET AND RECONNECT RETURN LINE.

9. TURN ENGINE OFF, AND FILL RESERVOIR TO THE "FULL COLD" MARK.

10. CONTINUE WITH FOLLOWING PROCEDURE "BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM".

BLEEDING THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM AFTER REPLACING THE FLUID OR SERVICING THE POWER STEERING HYDRAULIC SYSTEM, YOU MUST BLEED AIR FROM THE SYSTEM. AIR IN THE SYSTEM PREVENTS AN ACCURATE FLUID LEVEL READING, CAUSES PUMP CAVITATION NOISE AND OVER TIME COULD DAMAGE THE PUMP. TO BLEED THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM PROCEED AS FOLLOWS:

1. BEGIN WITH THE ENGINE OFF, FRONT WHEELS OFF THE GROUND, AND WHEELS TURNED ALL THE WAY TO THE LEFT.

2. ADD LOW TEMPERATURE CLIMATE SERVICE FLUID TO THE "FULL COLD" MARK ON THE FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR.

3. BLEED THE SYSTEM BY TURNING THE WHEELS FROM SIDE TO SIDE WITHOUT HITTING STOPS.

IMPORTANT: THIS MAY REQUIRE TURNING THE WHEELS FROM SIDE TO SIDE TWENTY TIMES. ON SYSTEMS WITH LONG RETURN LINES OR FLUID COOLERS, TURNING STEERING WHEEL LOCK-TO-LOCK FORTY TIMES MAY BE REQUIRED. KEEP THE FLUID LEVEL AT THE "FULL COLD" MARK. FLUID WITH AIR IN IT HAS A LIGHT TAN APPEARANCE. THIS AIR MUST BE ELIMINATED FROM THE FLUID BEFORE NORMAL STEERING ACTION CAN BE OBTAINED. 4. START THE ENGINE. WITH THE ENGINE IDLING, RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL. IF NECESSARY, ADD FLUID TO BRING THE LEVEL TO THE "FULL COLD" MARK.

5. RETURN THE WHEELS TO THE CENTER POSITION. LOWER FRONT WHEELS TO THE GROUND. CONTINUE RUNNING THE ENGINE FOR TWO OR THREE MINUTES.

6. TEST THE VEHICLE TO BE SURE THE STEERING FUNCTIONS NORMALLY AND IS FREE FROM NOISE.

IMPORTANT: INSPECT FOR FLUID LEAKAGE AT CONNECTION POINTS ALONG THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. 7. RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL AS DESCRIBED IN STEPS 3 AND 4 EXCEPT THAT THE FLUID LEVEL SHOULD NOW BE UP TO THE "FULL HOT" MARK AFTER THE SYSTEM HAS STABILIZED AT ITS NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE.

Checking and replacing power steering fluid


1. Open the hood of the vehicle.

2. Look for the power steering fluid reservoir.

3. Raise the reservoir and disconnect the hose that goes to the oil cooler.

4. Connect a hose of suitable diameter to the disconnected hose that goes to the oil cooler and put the hose end in the fluid jar.( be careful not to spill the fluid on the painted area of the body. Wipe off spilled fluid at once.)

5. Start engine and let it run at idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock position several times. When fluid stop running out from the hose, shut off the engine. Discard fluid that was drained from the reservoir.

6. Re-fit the return hose to the reservoir.

7. Fill the reservoir to the level mark.

Note: Use only fluid that is recommended by the manufacturer.

8, Start engine and run it at fast idle. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock position several times in order to bleed air that is present inside the system.

9. Recheck the fluid level. Add some if necessary.

Note: Do not fill the reservoir beyond the upper limit

Brake pedal hard with engine running, same as engine off


Check fluid levels in your power steering/brake reservoirs and look for hydraulic fluid leaks in the power steering and brake lines. Could be a bad power steering pump too. Your owners manual should show positions of hydraulic reservoirs.

I need to know how to take the power steering off a 1997 dodge caravan?


Power Steering Pump-Let me know if you need to take the power steering gear off: Removal & Installation 2.4L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
    • Remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir using a siphon pump.
    • Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump.
    • Loosen the nut securing the front power steering pump bracket to the aluminum bracket.
    • Raise and safely support the vehicle.
    • Place a drain pan under the vehicle to catch the power steering fluid.
    • Disconnect the connector from the oxygen sensor at the rear engine mount bracket. NOTE: The exhaust system needs to be moved to allow room for power steering pump removal.
    • Remove the bolts and nuts securing the catalytic converter to the exhaust manifold.
    • Disconnect the exhaust system hangers from the brackets. Move the exhaust system rearward and left as far as possible.
    • Raise the heat sleeve to expose the clamp and then disconnect the fluid return hose from the steel tube. Allow the fluid to drain.
    • Remove the accessory drive splash shield.
    • Remove the supply hose coming from the reservoir from the power steering pump. Drain the fluid from the hose.
    • Disconnect the pressure hose from the pump. Drain off excess fluid from the hose.
    • Remove the return hose from the pump. Allow the fluid to drain from the tube.
    • Remove the nut from the rear of the pump to the cast mounting bracket.
    • Loosen the three bolts securing the pump to the front mounting bracket. Then remove the nut and remaining bolt.
    • Remove the power steering pump and the front bracket from the cast bracket on the engine as an assembly through the exhaust tunnel.
    • Remove the three bolts attaching the front bracket to the power steering pump and separate the power steering pump from the front bracket.
To Install:
  1. Install the power steering pump through the exhaust tunnel of the vehicle.
  2. Loosely install the nut on the rear of the pump to hold the pump to the bracket.
  3. Install the front bracket on the pump and install the three bolts loosely.
  4. Install the nut and bolt securing the bracket to the cast bracket.
  5. Tighten the three front bracket-to-pump bolts to 40 ft. lb. (54 Nm).
  6. Connect the pressure hose to the power steering pump. Make sure to inspect the o-ring and replace as needed. Tighten the fitting to 275 in. lb. (31 Nm).
  7. Connect the low pressure return hose to the power steering pump.
  8. Connect the supply hose from the reservoir to the pump. Make sure the hose is not near drive belt.
  9. Install the drive belt and splash shield.
  10. Connect the fluid return hose to the steel tube on the cradle and cover with the heat shield sleeve.
  11. Properly position the protective heat sleeve over the return hose. Secure the heat sleeve with a tie strap to the hose to keep it in place.
  12. Install the exhaust system.
  13. Connect the oxygen sensor wiring connector to the vehicle wiring harness.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. Connect the negative battery cable.
  16. Fill and bleed the power steering system.
  17. Check for leaks.
3.0L Engine To Remove:
  1. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir using a siphon pump.
  3. Remove the drive belt from the power steering pump.
  4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  5. Place a drain pan under the vehicle to catch the power steering fluid.

  2. Install the pump on the bracket with the two mounting bolts. Tighten the two bolts to 40 ft. lb. (54 Nm).
  3. Install the pump rear support bracket. Tighten the nut and bolts to 40 ft. lb. (54 Nm).
  4. Connect the pressure hose to the power steering pump. Make sure to inspect the o-ring and replace as needed. Tighten the fitting to 275 in. lb. (31 Nm).
  5. Connect the low pressure return hose to the power steering pump.
  6. Connect the supply hose from the reservoir to the pump. Make sure the hose is not near drive belt.
  7. Install the drive belt and splash shield.
  8. Connect the fluid return hose to the steel tube on the cradle and cover with the heat shield sleeve.

After I replaced the power steering pump and reservoir on my 2002 Jeep, I still get air in the system. Where could it be coming from?


Your problem could be a pressure side hose that has a rupture that only leaks in extreme conditions. Inspect to replace with new to repair problem. First make sure you have removed the pump caps off of the hose fittings. If ok, it appears you may have a stuck valve in the rack assembly. Replacing the rack should solve your problem. ------- The new pump should be self-bleeding by turning the wheels left and right. Let sit over night to release air bubbles, recheck fluid level.------ Check the tension of the drive belts on the pump, as they may be loose. The power steering pump and reservoir is located on the front of the engine driven by one of the fan belts. There is a removable cap on the top with a dipstick attached. With the engine off, fill this up to the full mark with power steering fluid. Replace the cap, start the engine and check for leaks. On the back of the pump are two hoses either one could be leaking. REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Wipe the power steering cap and area free of dirt. Remove the power steering cap.

2. Use a siphon pump to remove as much fluid as possible from the power steering fluid reservoir.

3. With a helper in the vehicle, raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

WARNING :POWER STEERING FLUID, ENGINE PARTS, AND THE EXHAUST SYSTEM MAY BE EXTREMELY HOT IF THE ENGINE HAS BEEN RUNNING. DO NOT START ENGINE WITH ANY LOOSE OR DISCONNECTED HOSES. DO NOT ALLOW HOSES OR POWER STEERING FLUID TO TOUCH HOT EXHAUST MANI FOLD OR CATALYST.
4. Locate the power steering cooler attached to the crossmember support plate. Slide back the clamp and disconnect one of the two power steering return hoses at the power steering oil cooler and drain fluid in an appropriate container.
5. Have the helper turn the steering wheel back and forth quickly several times to force as much fluid as possible from the steering gear.
6. Reconnect the hose at the oil cooler using the original clamp.
7. Lower vehicle so the vehicle tires are not contacting the ground.
9. For proper fluid fill and bleeding air from the power steering system:

a. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range using Mopar power steering fluid (ATF+4) p/n 05013458AA.

b. With the engine OFF and the vehicles tires off the ground, slowly turn the steering wheel back and forth (lock to lock) slowly 20 times to force fluid into the steering gear.

c. Fill the power steering reservoir to the top of the fill range.

d. Start engine and let run for a few seconds, then turn oft engine.

e. Check fluid level and add if necessary.

f. Start engine, and slowly turn the steering wheel lightly contacting the left and right stops.

g. Stop the engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

h. Lower vehicle, start engine and slowly turn steering wheel lock-to-lock.

I. Stop engine and check fluid level. Add fluid if necessary.

j. If fluid is extremely foamy, allow vehicle to stabilize a few minutes, then repeat steps "i" and "j" until the fluid level remains constant after running the engine and turning the steering wheel from lock to lock.

10. Inform the vehicle owner/operator that a steering vibration may be noted for a few hundred miles until the air is completely removed from the steering system.

FIRST OF ALL YOU HAVE TO REMOVE POWER STEERING FLUID.USING A SUCTION GUN OR LARGE SYRINGE.REMOVE MUCH FLUID AS POSSIBLE.WHEN DONE REMOVING POWER STEERING FLUID.YOU NEED A INLINE WRENCH AND OPEN BOX END WRENCH TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING HOSE.YOU HAVE TO REMOVE POWER STEERING LINE FROM THE RACK.UNDER THE CAR SAFELY RAISE AND SUPPORT VECHICLE. THEN REMOVE THE TIRE OR WHEEL.THEN REMOVE THE INNER FENDER SPLASH SHIELD.ITS GOING TO BE A TIGHT FIT AND HARD PLACE TO GET YOUR HAND TO REMOVE THE POWER STEERING LINE FROM BOTTOM.WHEN DONE.MAKE SURE NEW POWER STEERING HOSE OR LINE HAS NEW O RINGS.WHEN INSTALLING THE THE NEW STEERING HOSE.WHEN ALL IS DONE BLEED POWER STEERING SYSTEM. FILL UP POWER STEERING PUMP TO CORRECT FLUID LEVEL.THEN LET IT SET FOR 2 MINUTES UNDISTURBED.THEN START THE ENGINE RUN IT FOR 2 TO 3 SECONDS.ONLY CHECK THE RESERVOIR AND ADD MORE FLUID AS NECESSARY.REPEAT THE OPERATION UNTIL THE FLUID LEVEL REMAIN CONSTANT.NOW RAISE FRONT OF THE CAR UNTIL THE WHEELS CLEAR THE GROUND START THE ENGINE AND INCREASE THE SPEED TO ABOUT 1500 RPM.NOW TURN THE STEERING WHEEL GENTLY FROM STOP TO STOP CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL.LOWER THE VECHICLE TO THE GROUND WITH ENGINE STILL RUNNING MOVE THE CAR FORWARD SUFFICIENTY TO OBTAIN FULL RIGHT LOCK FOLLOWED BY FULL LEFT LOCK BUT DONT HOLD THE SREERING WHEEL FIRMLY AGAINST THE STOPS.RECHECK THE FLUID LEVEL IF THE FLUID IN THE RESERVOIR IS EXTREMELY FOAMY ALLOW THE CAR TO STAND FOR A FEW MINUTES.WITH ENGINE OFF.WHEN JOB IS FINISH. WARNING DONT DRIVE CAR ON ROAD IF YOUR FLUID STILL FOAMY OR POWER STEERING PUMP MAKE NOISES.REBLEED THE SYSTEM AND CHECK FLUID LEVEL AND CHECK FOR LEAKS.DONT DRIVE CAR UNTIL YOU START FEELING NORMAL STEERING.IF YOU HAVE TROUBLE DONT DRIVE.HAVE IT TOWED TO THE NEAREST GARAGE.

Power Steering pump appears to be leaking but is full????


Just guessing. Could it be a warped brake disk? That would cause vibration. And vibration in steering might conceivably cause splashing out the power steering reservoir. You would know if the disk were warped by a shudder when you brake at hight speeds.
