Hi:
$1500 for a good driving car that you know the history of doesn't sound bad to me...Has your mom taken care of it mechanically? Stuff like regular maintenance and oil changes make a difference. If it is a 5 speed, has the clutch been changed, and if an Automatic, has the transmission been serviced?

Other than that, it is probably a good investment!

Bought a manual Toyota camry 2000 model 4 days ago from wellington and drove it to gisborne. Gave it my all and now it smokes from the engine yet still drives fine. What did I do?

where is smoke coming from the tail pipe or under the hood . suspect leaking valve cover gaskets . it is after all a 15 year old auto .nothing lasts forever .giving it your all sounds like you drove as fast and as hard as you could and that is not how one treats OLD things.

1997 toyota 4 runner shimmies really bad when braking. Brakes are good and suppect bushings on rack.

Nope, most likely bad tires. I love my yota, spent almost a grand on know it all's looking at the front end and trying to re-ballance bad tires. New tires...drives like brand new.

My engine light is still flashing

What Auto Zone doesn't do when it reads the stored DTCs is tell you the probable causes and what has to be repaired or replaced or retuned. You need to find a competent mechanic, not just a parts replacer, who will read the stored DTCs and determine what has to be done.
