Question about Mercury Grand Marquis

Not enough tension on retractor. How can I increase tension on a 2oo2 Grand Marquis?

Yes, the drivers side belt is slow or doesn't retract sometimes and I sometimes close the door on the unretracted belt.

Thanks for the suggestion, I called the dealer, there is nothing free on a TSB and he didn't know of any adjustment. His suggestion was to repalce it (surprise!!) but did suggest to go to a wrecking yard to get a replacement. As a spring also broke on the drivers door handle return which interlocks with the automatic door locking mechanism I guess I'll go to a junk yard and see if I can get both parts off a wrecked unit, I assume the Crown Vic other than color should be identical to my Grand Marq.

there have been at least a few TSB's on this issue by Ford and almopst all other OEM's

the most recent by Ford is...
    Reference Number(s): 05-16-11, Date of Issue: August 22, 2005

The fix is basically includes a kit an some Teflon tape
I have not personaly done this TSB becuase I don't work at the dealer anymore
Typically all I do it replace the belt but more often than not when the customer sees the price to replace they live with the concern

However, this being a SAFETY concern and having a TSB I ALWAYS advise to seek dealer assistance

Work should be performed for FREE at the dealer

How do I change a serpentine belt on a 1996 Mercury Grand Marquis

Start by drawing a diagram of the pulleys, and how the belt runs around them.(GM has sticker under the hood with a diagram, but I don't think anyone else does this). You need to find the tensioner, and use something to relieve the belt tension to allow belt removal.(some engines, especially on roomy rear wheel drive cars, may allow you to use an ordinary ratchet or a breaker bar to rotate the tensioner).

How do I replace the Airconditioning/power steering belt on a Grand marquis, Mercury(1992)? please show me in a diagram or print somehow

Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner off the serpentine belt with the serpentine belt tool. Pull the belt of the remaining pulleys by hand. Take the belt out of the engine well. Wrap the new belt around the bottom portion of the crankshaft pulley. Follow the belt routing diagram to route the belt over each remaining pulley until only the tensioner remains. Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner aside once more and slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley.Hold the belt in place with one hand while you move the tensioner slowly back into position with the other. Here you can fine the quality AC parts

Will a 2003 mercury marauder engine fit in a 2000 grand marquis

Yes they both use the same basic 4.6 Liter V8 engine, the difference is the Marauder engine is a higher powered and uses Dual Overhead Camshafts and 4 valves per cylinder (DOHC) the Grand Marquis is Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC), it will bolt in but you will need the all the electronics and the wiring harness including the Powertrain Control Module/computer (PCM) to make it work. You will greatly increase the Horse power of the Grand Marquis.

Radio reception in 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis is poor. Very few stations come in and static is louder than program. CD part of unit works great.

Buy yourself an aftermarket antenna and install it. Do not get a power retractor, nor one with a ball on the bottom, just one of those simple 31 inch rod units.

You will most likely have to pull a fender liner to mount it and fish the cable around to get it to the back of the radio. Try and avoid an extension cable. A local car stereo store could do this cheap in about an hour. Retracting antennas, in the windshield antennas just do not work.

1995 Grand marquis: The battery light comes on and the steering and the brakes get hard. The serpentine belt seems to be ok. Is it possible that it could be slipping? or maybe does it just need more...

belt is slipping. may need a new self tensioner if it's a self tensoin system. There is a mark on the self tensioner that has to be in the OK range.

How do you change an idler pulley on a 97 mercury grand marquis

Using either a serpentine belt tool or a long ratchet and a socket on the tensioner pulley bolt, turn the tensioner to relieve tension and pop the belt off. Remove the idler pulley bolt and replace the idler pulley. To finish it up simply reinstall the belt.

How to replace the drive belt in a mercury grand marquis 1989

Posted by Asker under the 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis for a 1989 model.

Sorry for the delayed response....
I am personally going back to answer your unanswered question.
I do not know if you still need the answer, but am answering it in case you do.

I also do not know if you have the 5.0L or 5.8L Engine or what options (AC/No AC, etc.).

Click on the following free, direct Link. It has the Serpentine/Drive Belt Diagrams for the 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis for both the 5.0L and 5.8L Engines and engine options (AC/No AC, etc.).

Standard Rules to Removal the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
1. Find the Tensioner.
2. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool, Or Wrench OR Ratchet, Rotate/Move the Tensioner USING THE AVAILABLE NUT (on the Pulley or Arm Base) OR the OPENING (3/8ths or 1/2 inch square opening) rotating the Tensioner Pulley/Arm - moving it away from contact with the belt and towards the area where the belt is not in contact with the Tensioner Pulley. The Tensioner is spring loaded, and is hard to rotate/move.
3. Remove the loosened belt off one of the other more easily accessed Pulleys.
4. DO NOT quickly release the Tensioner, but gently allow the Tensioner to rest in its closed position.

Standard Rules for Installing the Serpentine Belt with an Automatic Tensioner:
a. Pick a Pulley that is most easily accessed. This will usually be on top. This will be the last Pulley that the belt will go on.
b. Using the Diagram: Install the new Serpentine Belt on the remainder of the Pulleys....over, under, left right.
c. Using a Serpentine Belt Tensioner Tool or Wrench or Ratchet Tool: Rotate/Move the Tensioner Pulley/Arm "away" from Belt contact area on the Tensioner. This spring is pretty hard and with a new belt, it will be even harder to install. Rotate/Move this to as-close to the maximum allowed inorder to have enough slack in the belt to get it up and over the last pulley.
d. Using your other hand - Pull the Belt up and over the Last remaining Pulley.
e. Before releasing the pressure on the Tensioner, visually inspect the remainder Pulleys and the Belts' Positioning on them.
Let me know if this helped, or if you have additional information questions. Feel Free to contact me at!
