The rpm's will rise as the AC compressor cycles on and off, other than that it should stay pretty much the same.

SOURCE: rpms drop and rise while driving and stopping.

anytime you can smell gas, you have a leak, not good to drive if you can smell strong fume and not safe to drive. check all fuel line and fuel filter connection. check gasket on intake manifold and your injector. The rpm goes up and drown erratically, check your distributor connections and the ground wires. If distrubutor has bad ground or conection can cause erratic behavior RPM guage.

You may have developed a vacuum leak that the idle air controller is trying to compensate for. Or, it could also be caused by a dirty mass air flow sensor. You need to post the engine type and the other conditions the symptoms occur. It's hard to diagnose a problem on such limited information. Conditions such as engine temperature, foot on brake, in or out of gear are extremely important factors to take into consideration when solving engine performance problems.

Most likely, your Idle Air Controller (also known as Idle Air Bypass) is sticky or simply malfunctioning. Your Throttle Position Sensor may also be defective.

I have a 1984 rochseter quadrajet. how do you adjust the A.P.T. adjust ment screw

It's called the tip in procedure. You need to run the engine at 2000-2200 rpms and gently cover the choke opening with your hand. If the rpms go up about 100, it is set right. Too much of a rise in rpms, or rpm surging means it is too lean. No rise in rpms means it is too rich. If you pull a vacuum line and the rpms increase, it is too rich; pulling the vacuum line should keep the rpms steady or cause a slight drop. You need to remove the air horn to access the APT screw. You knock out the aluminum plug and install the air horn again to adjust while running the engine. You can 3/8 tap and plug the hole for easy access or drive the aluminum plug back in when done. Turn the APT screw Clockwise to lean it out and counterclockwise to richen it up. To turn it, make a tool with a 5/16 x3 bolt. Cut a notch in the bottom with a hacksaw or grinder about 1/8" wide. The bolt will fit into the hole with the air horn.

I had the exact same problem on my 04 GC. I put some Techron Concentrate Plus Fuel System Cleaner in from Wal-Mart and it seemed to fix the problems right away. Let me know.

No Heat in 99 Taurus

Just finished fixing my daughters 1999 taurus heat. It would blow warm only when running down the road. At idle it blew cold. I started with replacing thermostat, and water pump because they are the easier fix. Still did not help. Then I replaced the heater core. A daunting job but not that hard to move the dash slighly out of the way to replace. There is a good write up at tarusclub.com. After that, heat was better but at idle, it would still blow cool sometimes. Researched and found answer. Park car on the steepest hill you can find with front of car up. Start car and take off reservoir cap. Let car warm up and keep rpms about 1500. After a while the fluid will come running out of the car and all over the place but it will bring air bubbles with it. Reduce rpm, add more fluid and repeat about 3 times. It will make a mess but after that, the heater works perfectly. We get heat long before the temp gage indicates any and it never blows cold unless you lower the temp.

While Idleing, My RPMs gauge goes up and down and continues until my car turns off. I put it in Park and restart it and it is fine until I am Idling again.

I had this same problem but the high rpm and thermostat indicator rise together if it does i would look at engine coolant temperature sensor your thermostat could be bad as well

is the blower motor or does it sound like the fan comes on. Draining of the battery i would look for a light on if its not the blower motor.
