Question about 2003 Toyota Camry

Brake pedal Goes lower & feels Spongy after Engine warms uo on my 03 Camry 4 cyl, with antilock Brakes. Pedal feels ok until driving 20 or 30 miles. Seems to be Heat related?

It sounds to us like your rear brakes are out of adjustment. This does indeed give you the feeling that you are experiencing.

Here is a quick and easy way to tell if this is indeed the case:

In a safe location, like an empty parking lot, stop, set the park brake, and then give the car a little gas. If the car moves forward at all, your rear brakes are not adjusted properly. If the car moves, you will need to take the car to a professional that is capable of performing a brake adjustment for you.

Mcdevito75 Here, you also have a dual master cylinder, 1 section of the dual master cylinder could be bad. If at antime when you are Holding the brake down such as at a red light you feel the pedal going down then your master cylinder is bad. You may also have un-even wear on the brake pads, in either case a repair shop should check out the brake system on your car.

If it is 4 wheel disc the problem is NOT REAR BRAKE ADJUSTMENT and you need to have the slide pins checked to see if they are getting warm and sticking (frozen)

Brakes not working right


Air is getting into the system hence the spongy feel to the pedal. The problem may lie with the brake assist system - have it checked professionally - brakes matter!

This is most dangerous for you. I think that your power brake boost has failed, possibly due to a split vacuum hose. You can test this...
With the engine off, pump the brake pedal hard a few times. Then press down hard on the pedal and start the engine. You should feel the pedal sink perceptibly under your foot.
If this seems OK then your brake pads may be down to the metal on one or more wheels even though you here no noise. Remove the front wheels and have a look, as on p22 here (a later model).

Brake pedal goes to the floor? When does it happen. That is the most important piece of information. Most brake systems are power assisted via vacuum from the engine. Your brake booster is what makes the "power assist" work. There are some specific times when you will feel your brake pedal "fade" to the floor and it is normal due to the cycle of the brake components operation.If your brake pedal goes to the floor every time you step on it, stop driving and get to a repair facility! If the pedal is working when driving and the vehicle seems to be working as it always has, then chances are there is no concern. To be on the safe side, have it checked the next time you are in for any other type of service.There is a sensor inside most brake reservoirs that activates the indicator light in your instrument cluster when the level is lower than it should be. As your brake pads wear down, the system requires more fluid so the level at the reservoir drops setting the light. Same thing if there is a leak. The fluid level drops and the light goes on. This brake fluid leak would most likely be combined with a spongy pedal or a pedal fade every time you step on the brakes. A leak would also almost always have a wet area around the leak. Sometimes the leak can be internal to a part of the car you cannot see, so don't count on it.One easy way to check most brake boosters and the brake system for leaks is to turn the vehicle off and pump the brake pedal. Every time you depress the pedal you should feel the pedal "height" come up and the pedal get harder. After a few firm pumps of the pedal, hold it down. Leave pressure on the pedal for 20 seconds or so. Does the pedal move slowly (or quickly) to the floor? If so then there is a leak somewhere in the system. Keeping pressure on the brake pedal, start the vehicle. Does the pedal no drop? It should. That is the power assisted vacuum kicking in as the engine starts to run.The bottom line is that we are talking about your brakes. Your life, your passengers lives and the lives of others on the road around you depends on that system working properly. If you have any doubts, or feel uncomfortable, take it in to have it looked at. Know specifically what it is doing so that you can have your repair facility look at what you are feeling and tell you if

My brake peddel is spongee-soft, and goes to the floor if i prees hard?


when you push pedal hard & pedal goes to floor does brake light come on?
assuming brake fluid leval is ok & didnt run empty have you checked for a leak?
pulling all wheels & inspecting brakes,cylinders, calipers,& lines for leaks.
does the pedal pump up & feel ok with engine running?if so there is air in the system
if it does'nt change the way the pedal feels & no leaks are found & brake linings are ok & adjusted
properly than your master cylinder is leaking internally & needs to be replaced

There is never a test or reason to pump your brakes

Accomplishes absolutely nothing.

There is no pressure in a braking system at all,
until you SLOWLY apply the brake pedal.

Then less than 1" off movement in the master cyl,
will develop 600 to 1800 lbs at the wheels

Release the brake pedal, the system goes to zero,
IT DOES NOT HOLD ANY PRESSURE

To answer your question

You not suppost to press the pedal hard
The saying goes--you apply the brakes,
not force the pedal arm and pin into the
vacuum booster, as though you want to damage it

loosen of the hand-brake adjustment and press the brake pedal a few times to self adjust the rear brakes.
Re-tighten the handbrake adj last.
Front brake sounds like a seized caliper,If possible remove caliper and clean and lubricate the piston.
This may work but replacement caliper may be the only other solution.Make sure the caliper slides are also clean and lubricated and the brake pads are in good order.(TRY THIS FIRST)
Also new brake shoes can make the pedal feel spongy for a couple of hundred miles until they have been run in.

I have a 92 chrsy. 5th ave with no antilock brakes. just base brakes with rear drums. replaced master cly. due to leaking and replaced all the brake lines and hoses. i have good streams of fluid from all 4...


When you bleed the brakes are you starting with brake furthest from the master cylinder? Also was the master cylinder bench bled? If everything there is okay and you are not getting any air in fluid stream, you could try bleeding the brakes by having some one slowly pump the pedal till it is firm. Then have them let off open first bleeder valve and slowly depress to floor and hold there untol the valve is closed. repeat this at all bleeders. You may want to have car running to do this. Try this and let me know.

Spongy brake pedal


I have a 2001 Chevy 1500 4 X 4 that recently had all new pads, rotors, and calipers installed. Since then my brake pedal goes almost to the floor before I get any brakes. I took it back to the shop and they bled the brakes with no better results. I bled them also with no results. I took the truck back and they installed a master cylinder with no results. It's now at the Chevy dealer and they say it's normal - BS! I had good brakes before I had all of the brake parts replaced, no one can figure it out. If you have a load in the truck or if you tow anything you better be looking at the ditch to avoid an accident. The original brakes would put you nose into the windshield and now I could stop it better the Fred Flinstone way. Anyone have an answer????????

spongy brake pedal indicates air in the system... have the brakes inspected for leaks as it leaks when you apply the brakes and sucks in air when you release them.

if the booster is bad the pedal would be hard sounds like the e-brake is stuck take off the drums and make sure the arms are all the way back then did you adjust the rear brakes after changing the shoes
