Question about 1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

2 Answers

My 1998 Monte Carlo Z34 is losing coolant very fast. I had the intake manifold gasket replaced last friday. It was low again on Tuesday. It doesnt completely drain it just gets low. I refilled it yesterday and this morning its low again. I cant see any visible leaks on the ground, in the oil or anything. I'm not sure where its going. Again, no fluid in the oil or transmission fluid. Loss of power before i replaced the gasket but its no longer a problem. No transmission problems. No over heating. Please help..

Try replacing the radiator cap. when they get old they let coolant out before it gets hot, a new one should fix the problem.

Cheers, Timo.

SOURCE: How do I remove the heater inlet pipe from lower

you may have to ist remove the belt and the alternator.there should be one bolt through a bracket on the pipe holding it to the engine. then just wiggle and twist it until it comes out.the o ring is sometimes aseperate part.do not use a generic one.

How to replace a thermostat on a1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo 3.1 v6

you may be able to take off the water housing by taking the front bolt out and loosening the rear, but its TOUGH to get too. A repair shop can do it for you. I replace them if I have the intake manifold off for any reason. check if intake gaskets are leaking,(common), then you need them replaced and the thermostat is easy to replace at that time.

Dense white smoke usually means coolant is getting into the combustion chambers. If the engine then quit and will not easily turn over (as you described 'battery is dead'), you may have one or more cylinders hydraulically locked. There is coolant in the cylinder and the piston cannot come to the top on the compression stroke because water prevents it; air is compressible, water is not. Remove the spark plugs one by one and see if they are wet or very clean (steam cleaned). If so, you need to find why coolant is getting into that/those cylinders. Bad head gasket, cracked head, cracked block.

Should be located on the top of motor. May bre next to thermostat. Drain some coolant from bottom of radiator. Use liquid teflon for thread sealant.

I had a similar problem on a 3.4 Lumina Z34. It was a leaking intake gasket. Be careful with the plastic vaccumn lines as they will get brittle.

Oil in over coolant tank

If there is oil inside the coolant liquid that is the head gasket.

Check first if oil can leak into the coolant tank from the cap.

Usually when you get oil into the coolant liquid you have an head gasket problem, do a compression test, or buy the home tester below.
