I am sorry to tell that the gearbox need to have some major repair. It is also not advisable to continue driving as the gearbox can breakdown completely leaving you stranded. At least one the cluster drive gears in the gearbox is damaged (gear tooth stripped off) that will result in that only some of the gears being able to be selected. The broken off tooth are still in the gearbox and due to the oil movement in the gearbox it can be "washed up " in between to engaged gears destroying those as well. This will happen up to the point where there are no gear selection at all.
I suspect that there is a failed bearing on the output shaft or on the cluster shaft. This comes from the burnt oil condition which happens when a bearing is over heating due to failure and the gears not aligned when trying to change gears.
This is more than likely an input cluster bearing beginning to fail. It could also be a sign that the gearbox is simply out of oil. Check oil level & if it is ok it is more than likely the input cluster bearing in the gearbox. Low oil is usually accompanied by gear noise which is usually more noticeable in 1st, 2nd & reverse. Input cluster noise is much less noticeable when in gear due to load on input shaft.
hi from uk lets not jump to gearbox ?? this noise could be something simple and less expensive ! if this noise is only whilst driving? but no noise when stationary ? may i suggest 1st youcheck g/box oil level is ok and no leaks ? this noise?? could you give more info as to sounds like ? does noise lessen as you turn left/right say at roundabouts? is sound more noticed onthe left or right front ? if you could give more info it will help give better idea and hope fully a diagnosis ? advise! do not go to garage and say can you look at car i think gearbox has gone ? if you want to spend $$$$$s being conned it may be some other fault you can diy ? so if you come back with info ? we may be able to help save you unnecessary expence ?
It seems oil level is low in your gearbox, and it most likely leaking from adapter bushing ( where cable is connected to gearbox). You need to replace seals or complete bushing and correct oil level. Better if you visit your mechanic.
Oil pressure sending unit fail often and give this false indication, but because the engine will be severely damaged if the pressure is really low so hook up a manual oil pressure test gage to see what the pressure is, if it is within specs replace the oil pressure sending unit.
