Question about Geo Tracker

2 Answers

Suzuki Sidekick, Geo Tracker, Kia Sportage or ??? Whats the better choice to tow behind larger rig? Looking for something that gets at least 25 mpg. I know most auto trans vehicles towing can damage trans, but I see a lot of these behind RV's. Can any of these with Auto trans be towed? Also question, some of these are 2wd, do the 2wd versions get any better mpg than the 4x4? I really don't need 4x4 and would think 2wd less maintenance costs.

Most auto trans vehicles can't be towed in neutral either or will cause damage because the trans oil pump is not running and lubricating the rest of the trans. However some can be, that's the info I'm looking for. Someone who knows for sure please.

The link to Remco was helpful. I never thought of an electric pump for trans oil. Kinda pricey though.

I would go with the Tarcker or Sidekick, they are the smaller of the three and should get at least 25 miles a gallon. A 2 wheel drive will get better gas milage, if you don't have the use for 4 wheel drive, I won't get it, you have another differential and a transfer case to contend with with the 4 wheel drive. I don't know of any certain limit that you can tow a automatic transmission vehicle, if it's put in nuetral, I don't see how it would damage the transmission.

There are several devices made for towing automatic vehicles, One is a Lube Pump, which provides lubrication to the automatic transmission in a front-wheel-drive vehicle. With a separate luberication pump, you can make sure the towed vehicle's transmission gets the cooling that it needs. Another is a drive shaft coupling device, which you can use when you're towing a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Instead of manually disconnecting and removing the drive shaft, a drive shaft coupling allows you to switch between driving (drive shaft engaged) and towing (drive shaft disengaged) modes. Then there is an axle lock for towing a front-wheel-drive vehicle with the drive wheels on the ground. Rather than manually disconnecting your front axle, this device disconnects the automatic transmission with just a simple twist. Once you have the axle unlocked, you can safely tow the vehicle. A twist in the opposite direction locks the axle for normal driving. Check Remco Towing.com. I've only towed vehicles across town and never had a problem, but longer distantances would be a different story from what I have researched.

I would also consult the owners manual for the vehicle for their recommendations for towing the vehicle.

Here is your best bet.
The 2 wheel drive on a pull behind 2 wheel tow dolly. put the non transmission - or non drive wheels on the unit and down the road you go. This is by far the safest and preferred method.
The Kia Sportage will work it is rear wheel drive so back it onto the tow dolly and you're all set.

How do you open the hood on a 1992 geo tracker

If it's not under the dash or near the kick panel on the driver's side, then check inside the glove compartment on the top part of it. For some reason, the Suzuki Sidekick has it located in the glove compartment. I'm guessing that since both cars are made identical, then it should be in the same location
