Question about 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

My 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport is starting to cut out at any time. After waiting for a few minutes it will start again. I was wondering if it could be the distributor pick-up?

Seen this many times on Grand Cherokees. The crank sensor is going bad. Replace it with a dealer crank sensor, not an aftermarket one.

There is an auto shutdown relay in the box in the engine compartment that powers several things including the PCM.

Engine dies as if the key were turned off-sometimes recovers for a period-then dies again-problem seems worse after warmed up-I have a 2001 cherokee limited-4.0 l engine with 165k miles

You may be correct....The ignition switch may be bad and disconnecting. I'd also check wiring and plugs to essential items such as the crank sensor and relays such as for fuel pump auto shutdown etc. as well as the relays themselves. Only way I can think of to thet the switch would be to connect a volt meter to the "out" side of the switch and drive it. If when the power cuts off the meter reads either very low or 0, then move the probe to the power in side and see if its got power there. If there is, then the problem is in the switch if not, you need to check "up-stream" from there till you locate the disconnect. (bulkhead connector etc) Also check power to the computer to make sure it hasn't got a disconnect there.

My 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Will die going down the road. Sometimes it starts back up without me touching the key.other times I have to wait a few minutes before it will crank again.Any suggestions? Thank...

I've got to be reading this incorrectly...You are driving, the engine turns off...you pull off the road? And then without touching the key the engine re-starts, but you haven't touched the key? Or, sometimes you need to sit there for a few minutes and then turn the key to start it?
