1993 jeep Cherokee sport ignition sometimes works

Ignition switch is loose and will turn on the power but will only engage the starter motor from time to time. I already put on a new starter motor.

Ok first there should be 2 wires connected to the starter the small one is from the ignition switch ( should only have 12 volts when key is cycled ) the larger one comes directly from the battery ( should have battery voltage at all times ) ck these things then get back with me on the results . Thanks Klay

I would lean more towards your ignition switch being bad. Although you could be right I have not seen that problem very often. More often than not its the ignition switch. Good luck.

My 98 jeep grand cherokee wont start. It doesnt even click or turn over. battery is fine, headlights, dome lights, all go on. Radio doesnt work with ignition on. I checked ALL the fuses, I replaced the...

fuse 8 40a supplies power to starter relay and ignition switch, to close the starter solenoid and engage the starter which draws directly from the battery. check to see that the starter relay is closing, if not ensure that the park neutral switch is not faulty (open circuit), it provides path to close relay (ground side) on the 85 - 86 terminals. if the starter relay does not close the starter will not run. if you have a spare relay swap out the relay for a quick fix attempt. hope this helps

2002 jeep liberty cranks then dies sometimes cranks and is ok

If it runs ok while the starter is engaged and then shuts off after you let go of your ignition key you most likely have a bad starter solenoid. The solenoid is supposed keep the ignition circuit energized when the ignition switch is in the on position. Most of the time this is the problem.

Ignition/starter failing to engage for multiple turns of key

sounds like the starter has a flat spot on the solenoid. remove and test the starter, replace if necessary.

Wont start will not even turn over makes no noise when i turn the key. all lights and radio works

Check the wiring to the starter, check the starter solenoid, check if the ignition switch sends power to the starter wiring. It may be possible that the ignition switch failed. If the starter has 12V power, remove them and check if the starter is Ok when dismounted

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Ignition Lights Come on but wont crank

Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.

Starting issues

ASE mechanic.
A couple of different scenerios. first could be the ignition switch not suppling voltage to the starter. You might have good battery voltage at the starter, but not the trigger voltage from the ignition. thats the small wire on the starter. OR if i cranks a couple of times and then starts it might be a crank sensor for those engines are known for that sensor problem. keep me posted

Short in ignition harness shutdown jeep cherokee sport

If its completely not doing anything, it may be the park-neutral safety switch- it engages when you put the jeep into park, and if bad will not let anything happen- its as if the jeep is still in gear, and it kills everything. Jiggle your gearshift, go in and out of park a few times- might help.
Other fix is to open the hood, find the starter relay, remove the black plastic cover over the relay guts, and with the ignition switch on, press down on the relay- it bypasses the safety switch, and should start right up. You won't shock yourself- we've been doing it intermittently for two years.
