The part in the pan was put in at the factory, it is put in the fill tube to keep dirt out until the dipstick is installed, it is not needed just shows the pan has not been off since the car was new.

What is the filter located under the battery, that looks like a oil filter?

It's the transmission filter, and your tranny fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles. Saturn decided to try a spin on filter, instead of the traditional paper / frame filter that goes into the transmission pan.

How to change the filter on the automatic transmission on Honda civic 89?

In the Civic the Transmission Filter is located inside the transmission, you must remove the bottom pan of the transmission, the filter is just below the Valve body, remove all the bolts from the pan and with a large catch pan under the pan gently pry the pan down, it is very messy as there is no drain plug, install the new filter element and then clean off all the old gasket on the transmission pan and the transmission, reinstall the pan with the bolts just finger tight, then evenly tighten the pan bolts down to about 12 foot pounds, add about 1.5 quarts of the correct ATF type fluid and run the car at idle until the transmission is hot, then top off the transmission fluid level, DO NOT OVERFILL.

How to change the transmission fluid

it is simple but messy, you need to remove the bottom pan from transmission, there is no drain plug, I use a plastic garbage can lid (w/holes drilled in it) to catch the fluid, then reinstall the pan and a new gasket and torque evenly all arouind the pan to about 12 foot pounds, add 3 quarts of fluid and run the engine untilthe transmission reaches at least 185-190 F, then top off trans fluid to fullmark hot.

I have a 1987 ford f-150 with a 302. I would like to put the 302 into a 1989 ford f-150 that is four wheel drive that currently has a 4.9 in it. would there be any problems with doing this.

302 is a 5.0L v8 engine and 4.9 is a 300ci, 6 cylinder. so you may have problem with transmission, exhaust manifold, motor mounts, vacuum lines/hose, radiator, power steering pump, a/c system, and mostly wirings. not to mention there is a computer in those trucks!
