Question about 1998 Pontiac Sunfire

1 Answer

The drive belt on our 1998 Pontiac Sunfire keeps breaking. We have fixed it 4 times. The first by a paid mechanic which last like a week and then we have fixed it the other times. This has lasted anywhere from a week to 6 months. My husband says that it is just stripped and worn down but I wonder if maybe there is also another reason. Any suggestions??

The spring loaded belt tensioner should examined closely. They have a tendency to cause the belt to track crooked when they start to fail. You should not see any of the coil spring that is mounted behind the tensioner.

Where is timing belt located on my 2002 Pontiac Grand Am

nowhere. it has a timing chain that should last forever as long as you keep your oil in good shape. doesn't matter if you have a 4 cylinder or a v6, they both use chains.

Timing belt cover broken?

You have a more pressing problem. If oil sprayed on the timing belt it won't last long. Try returning to the "mechanic" to point this out. The replacement belt probably needs to be replaced. The mechanic will have an opportunity to replace the damaged cover while replacing the oil soaked belt.

1@earthlink.netI have a problem with the timing belt tensioner in my 1998 sunfire. It keeps going bad on me. This will be the third time I will need to get this fixed. Why does the same problem keep coming...

Probably not the tensioner. Its the installer who is installing it incorrectly or other issues have gone unnoticed, such as bad water pump, pulleys out of alignment. (cam, water pump, oil pump, crankshaft) all bearing components should be replaced at the same time belt is. The idler and belt tensioner bearings. Napa has complete kit with correct installation instruction.
good luck

Lookng for serpentine belt routing diagram for 1998 2.4 L sunfire

1998 Pontiac Sunfire Belt Routing Diagram

A drive belt routing diagram is needed when replacing a drive belt to help simplify the installation process. The problem arises as there are many different ways a drive belt can be configured. In this configuration the belt length will vary not allowing the belt to be installed. Also alternative configurations could turn a particular accessory the wrong direction, creating more problems. Always reinstall the drive belt in the exact configuration as the previous belt to prevent these problems. Always use high quality replacement products to avoid premature drive belt failure. If a multi rib drive belt fails it must be replaced immediately to avoid such situations such as engine overheating and loss of the power steering system. Whenever a belt replacement is required inspect the pulley condition to ensure there are no sharp edges on any of the pulleys, this will cause the belt to shred and fail. Confirm that all pulleys are free from debris such as small pebbles, these pebbles will cause the belt to pit and significantly impair the belt performance. The belt tensioner plays an important role to the drive belt performance, if this tensioner is weak it can allow the belt to lose tension allowing the belt to jump and skip. This condition will result in noises such as squeaking, chirping and ticking.

Take it back to your mechanic, it may just be a connector that got bumped loose since the light was off before service.

Take it to your nearest Autozone, they will run a scan on it free of charge. This will give you a good starting point. But my guess is either a bad ground or electrical short in the dash somewhere.
