2000 toyota celica gt, i just replaced my engine my old engine spit a rod. the new engine is in the car and hooked up correctly. it has spark and fuel and air flow but will not start. it back fires on cranking which this makes me think its a timing issue but its coil over plug and the ecu controlls ignition timing. im at a total lose need help

its a rebuilt engine and is an interferance motor it would smack the valves if the valve timing was off.

  • orioles2005 Apr 29, 2010

the valve timing looks right i put cylinder 1 on tdc on a compression stroke and all timing marks line up as far as ignition timing it should be correct since its controlled by the ecu but i dont know if there is a module thats causing it to be off.

im getting blow back through the intake which definatly means its a timing issue but if everything looks good im not sure why it would do that. it might be one tooth of but thats it im not sure one tooth off could cause this issue.

Timing issue sound correct

pull off the front cover to verify cam/crank alignment marks?

when you say "new" engine do you me retail "new" or "new" for you

in other words, if you bought it second hand then you may have a NEW problem

since you have not had the engine running I would disagree... if you are 180 degrees off there would be no interference and spark would be on the exhaust stoke

additionally, I've seen timing off just 2 teeth cause a no start with NO interference issues

just my two cents... CHECK TIMING
if you have spark, fuel and compression, the ONLY thing left is are they in TIME!

I'm going to guess TIMING BELT. Fairly common with this engine. Thankfully, they are a "NON-interference" motor so it didn't do any damage when the belt snapped. Just need to replace it. Should cost around $300-$400 depending on where you are. Good luck!

If you have spark than your fuel pump should turn on for a couple seconds prior to cranking the ignition. Try turning the key to the on position without cranking and listen for the pump. You should hear a two second run by the pump. Be in a very quiet place to do this as it is not very loud. Or have someone listen by the fuel filler door with the cap out.

You might want to check your fuel pump relay for power as well. Maybe it is bumped or damaged fromt he engine swap? It should be up front with a bunch of other relays. Wouldnt it be funny if they took it out to make sure the engine wasnt cranked prematurely?!

Good luck and be careful.

Need torque for a 2000 Toyota Celicia GT 1.8L

Crank Main caps Tightening Torque

For the 12 Pointed Head Bearing Cap Sub-Assembly Bolts
Start from center bolts and tighten in a clockwise rotation working out
Step 1 all bolts 22 Nm or 16 ft lb
Step 2 all bolts 44 Nm or 32 ft lb
Step 3 all bolts 45 degrees additional clockwise rotation using an angle indicator.
Step 4 all bolts 45 degrees additional clockwise rotation using an angle indicator.

Hexagon Head Bearing Cap Sub-Assembly Bolts
1ZZ-FE Engine 18.5 Nm (14 ft.lb)
2ZZ-GE Engine 18 Nm (13 ft.lb)

Connecting rod:
1. Apply a light coat of engine oil on the threads and under the heads of the connecting rod cap bolts.
2. Install and alternately tighten the 2 connecting rod cap bolts in several passes. Torque: 1ZZ-FE: 20 Nm (204 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) 2ZZ-GE: 30 Nm (306 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) If any of the connecting rod cap bolts does not meet the torque specification, replace the connecting rod cap bolts.
3. Retighten the cap bolts by 90° more
4. Check that the crankshaft turns smoothly.

I have a 2000 toyota celica gt DOHC 1.3 engine (i think on engine size) that will not run longer than 3 seconds. It shuts off and will not turn back on but will crank over. Things that have been changed...

Most common I have seen is your ground wire. I know it sounds simple, but make sure there are no holes (see if you can have a person check while turning over to see for sparks) & make sure it is tight.
