Not likely since the starter is engaging the flywheel
yes the trans is connected to the flywheel but only hydraulically through the torque converter
have you watched your belts under the hood while someone is trying to crank then engine?
Most GM's have this problem about a year after a starter was replaced w/o shims
You may have a flat spot on your flywheel
