Not likely since the starter is engaging the flywheel

yes the trans is connected to the flywheel but only hydraulically through the torque converter

have you watched your belts under the hood while someone is trying to crank then engine?

Most GM's have this problem about a year after a starter was replaced w/o shims

You may have a flat spot on your flywheel

I got a 2.2 chevy cavalier 2001. Even if i put the booster cables right on the starter the engine wont start (i can hear the starter trying to) . If i want to check the transmission(stuck?) how?

When you say, "I can hear the starter trying to", do you mean that the starter is turning over, but the engine isn't? Or do you mean that the starter is turning the engine over, but it's not catching?

In either case, most likely it's not the transmission.

I went out to move my 2005 cavalier and when I shifted from reverse to drive, it slipped right thru everything and wouldn't catch. It wouldn't even catch in park. I pulled the parking break and...

I don't know beans about automatice transmissions and the average person can only check the fluid levels and take it to a transmission shop if it is more serious.
As far as the engine goes, you need to localize the problem because with the other indications it might not be the normal stuff. So, what I would recommend is that you take the serpentine belt off and try to turn the crank with a large wrench (CW only) with the car in neutral. If you can turn it, then it is probably not your engine freezing up. If it won't turn then the transmission is probably not disengaging from the flywheel - maybe the torque converter.

If it does turn over, then you can put the belt back on and try to jump start the car with another vehicle or the boost function on a battery charger. It it starts then you know to look at the charging system - battery, alternator. If it doesn't start then the starter or the starter reley.

2001 taurus wont turn over or catch when trying to shift...what could it ne?

If you mean your cars transmission wont engage the gears it could be a couple things you could be low on transmission fluid, or worst case scenario the transmission itself could be failing

My tranny slips some times but it will catch after a few min

SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION FLUID LOW OR YOU NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE.THE 4T40E OR 4T45E IF YOU DONT SEE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK.BEST TO DO A FILTER AND FLUID CHANGE.YOU NEED 7 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID A NEW TRANSMISSION FILTER AND PAN GASKET.I WOULD BUY FILTER AND PAN GASKET AT DEALERSHIP.YOU NEED A LARGE DRAIN PAN TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID.IF YOU HAVE A TRANSMISSION DIP STICK. BEFORE YOU FIRST BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL ON DIP STICK.SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK.IF NOT ADD FLUID TO FULL MARK.THEN CRANK VECHICLE LET IDLE UNTIL ENGINE HOT OPERATION TEMPERATURE ABOUT 10 MINUTES.THEN APPLY BRAKE PEDAL.THEN SLOWLY SHIFT TRANSMISSION SHIFTER THROUGH ALL GEARS 2 TIMES.THEN PUT TRANSMISSION IN PARK.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF NOT AT FULL MARK ADD TRANSMISSION FLUID UNTIL LEVEL CORRECT.

Transmission Slippage

You can have the clutch and the pressure plate checked. If it is an automatic tranny you may try to drain the fluid and have it replaced or have the solenoid cleaned out or checked. The solenoid controls the hydraulic pressure to the clutch

You have to check the transmission fluid and replace the transmission fluid and filter.

Transmission feels like it slips on take off.

Agreed. I had the same problem, transmission would lag between 1st and 2nd, and it would **** violently sometimes from a stop. Anyway, they had to rebuild the transmission. I'm not sure how much it would be as I only paid deductible from warranty ($100.00) but they kept saying average rebuild price on 2003 impala is about $1,200-$1,500.

Not catching 2nd gear

Check the level and condition of your tranny fluid.
Check the level with the car running, in park.
The fluid should be a pink or bright red color.

Transmission

yeah its something else..

on the selector is a bushen (something like a washer) its proberally worn and needs changing. I'd recommend taking this to a auto technician mechanic ,, cause after its replaced or adjusted you will need to adjust the kick down cable as well..

it may also be a mountain(engine or transmission) mountain rubber.
