Question about Smart fortwo
My smart car wont always go into reverse gear it just flashes on neatural. But if i try to start the engine in reverse it flashes 'R' and wont start so i asume that means the car knows its in reverse.
It mainly happens when parking... but this may just be because thats when i mainly reverse.

unhook cable from tran. and see if you can push it in park if so you need a shift cable or the natural safty swicth is bad

it sounds like your gearshift cable is broken..if you can jack up vehicle and support it safely,get someone to move shifter and look on driver's side of transmission and see if linkage is moving on trans..linkage is up near top of trans..i have seen this problem before

The parking pin inside the transmission has sheared and is interfering with reverse as well. I would locate a reputable transmission shop.

This issue is caused by a transmission fault or malfunction, most likely a shift solenoid in the trans has failed or the trans control module has a problem, the trans can be tested for codes that will show what circuit or component of the trans controls is causing the light to stay blinking, have it tested.
