is there a diagram of where the alternator is

  • blancakristi Apr 28, 2010

I bought a use alternator....so I am following the directions I have from here...but now I am trying to locate the nut from these steps... 2 Locate the wiring harness connectors on the back of the alternator. Remove the nut that secures the wire and ring connector on the post with a socket and ratchet. Locate the second connector on the alternator. This connector has a locking tab on it that you will need to depress then pull straight out to remove the connector

  • blancakristi Apr 28, 2010

I see the one wiring that you depress...it's the other one I am trying to locate...

  • blancakristi Apr 28, 2010

no....I am looking from the top on the left side I see the alternator...and I see the the one connector with the locking tab...I just don't see the other connector it's talking about with the nut...

  • blancakristi Apr 28, 2010

yes I have the right alternator...I wasn't sure about that connection...it's the red one on the diagram that I take off first...

  • blancakristi Apr 28, 2010

Do you have to do anything with the distributor cap? I had heard that you might have to disconnect something besides the battery terminal to avoid getting a nasty shock...

How to Replace the Alternator on a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2

Instructions Things You'll Need:

  • Wrench set (Metric)
  • Socket set
  • Torque wrench
  1. Step 1 Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery post or terminal. Use a wrench or socket and ratchet to loosen the retaining bolt. Then remove the cable and isolate it away from the battery.
  2. Step 2 Locate the wiring harness connectors on the back of the alternator. Remove the nut that secures the wire and ring connector on the post with a socket and ratchet. Locate the second connector on the alternator. This connector has a locking tab on it that you will need to depress then pull straight out to remove the connector.
  3. Step 3 Locate the upper mounting bolt on the alternator. Remove the bolt with a wrench and set it aside for use during reassembly.
  4. Step 4 Turn the front wheels on the car toward the driver's side and lock the steering by turning the key to the off position. Locate the splash shield under the wheel well and remove the retaining bolts that hold it place.
  5. Step 5 Remove the splash shield and reach up through the opening to remove the lower mounting bolt on the alternator with a wrench. Remove the alternator through the top of the engine compartment.
  6. Step 6 Position the new alternator in the engine compartment and align the mounting hole on the bottom of the unit with the bracket on the engine. Insert the mounting bolt working through the access hole under the wheel well, and tighten it by hand. Do not tighten it with a wrench yet.
  7. Step 7 Position the belt over the pulley on the alternator. Then insert the upper mounting bolt. Pull the alternator away from the engine to tighten the belt then secure the upper mounting bolt with a wrench.
  8. Step 8 Torque the upper mounting bolt to 16 foot-pounds and the lower mounting bolt to 35 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Install the electrical connector on the rear of the alternator by plugging it into the connector. Replace the splash shield under the driver's side wheel well and replace the mounting bolts. Tighten them with a socket and ratchet.
  9. Step 9 Install the single wire and ring connector on the post located on the alternator, followed by the retaining nut. Tighten the nut with a wrench.
  10. Step 10 Install the negative battery cable on the negative battery post and tighten the retaining bolt with a wrench. Start the car and verify that the alternator is working by checking you dash gauges or warning lights

You need to have the alternator checked for proper output and go from there. You may have flood it with water and that caused damage to it.

My key for my ford excort zx2 starts the car but doesnt open it. So how do I open it?

Sounds like you have an aftermarket ignition cylinder. Some locksmiths can make you a key for your doors or you can try giving the VIN number to the Ford dealer to see if they can cut you a key for it. If that fails, you could always install a keyless entry system and just use a remote to unlock the doors.

Ford 2001 excort zx2

Just check the fuse box for busted fuses. They are properly labelled as headlights, park lights, etc..
Also check the wirings for short circuited lines. Further-
more check the bulbs, if these are still ok.

Your not going to find a fuse for it take it in to any auto parts store and they will do a free check on your altinatior and tell you that you need a new one that's what I'm leaning twards is a new altinator.

Will a 1999 ford contour engine fit in a 2002 ford escort ?

I believe it will fit but would recommend you go by a Ford place and ask them but if all the parts match I believe you can do it but just take the measurments of the engine and the axels because you want to make sure that it will fit in the car you want it in :) cause when I was a lot younger I put a 5.0 engine in an excort gt and it had a 1.9 so you should not have a problem
