Question about 1988 BMW 7 Series
MY 1988 BMWIL 7 SERIES SEDAN WILL START UP AND GO INTO GEAR FOR ABOUT A BLOCK OR TWO THEN IT STOPS AND NO MATTER WHAT GEAR ITS IN IT WONT GO INTO GEAR IT ALSO HAS A REALLY SCREACHING WINDING SOUND WHEN ITS RUNNING LIKE LOOSE BEARINGS
My guess is the screeching sound is the belt slipping. Check the tension and if slack this can be taken up by adjusting the alternator a little bit further out from the engine. The sudden cutting out sounds like a fuel cut-off problem. Check the fuses and the relay to the fuel pump. If all OK, check that the pump is operational and that the in-line fuel filter is not clogged. If fuel still fails to flow you may need to look at having to remove the fuel tank to check that the fuel pick-up pipe in it is clear.
