Question about 1998 Ford Escort
If it is the check engine light that is on, it indicates the computer is sensing a fault.
This might seem odd, but turn key forward to on/run, but do not start the car. Press the gas pedal to the floor and release 3 times. Turn the key off, pull key out. Then start as normal. This worked with my 99 taurus.
The thing is that if that works, the light will probably come back on once the computer senses the fault again.
Go to your local auto parts superstore, and have them perform a scan of the computer for the fault code. This service should be free.
