You guessed right. Your tranny is in bad need of repair. If you're going to fix it at home - I would be sure you have the place and tools as these can cost nearly as much as a rebuild.
I suggest strongly you put the fine 93 Jeep of your on a wrecker either way. Have it towed to a shop or home and go from there. You know a used one is a **** shoot so I suggest you check around on the web for a reputable repair place and have your transmission repaired there.
