Question about 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Transmission noise I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee laredo, 5.2 L V8. About 2 weeks ago i hopped in the car to leave work and it started up fine. I put it into drive and it started making a real loud whining noise. When i pushed on the accelerator nothing happened. other than the whining getting louder. I pushed the pedal to the floor and the tranny engaged violently and accelerated very slowly. the same thing happens in reverse and all other gears. 1, 2 , D and reverse all do the same thing. I think it could be the torque converter but im not sure. Right now im afraid to drive the car home so its parked in a parking lot. Please help

yeah see i am in the military stationed in germany and jeep parts i have found are hard to come by here. i have looked into getting a reman from the states and have it shipped over here but am having no luck getting a fair price. im just not sure what to start with first. there is nothing else wrong with the jeep. Do you think it is the torque converter? im really not sure where to start?

Hi summ8989,
You guessed right. Your tranny is in bad need of repair. If you're going to fix it at home - I would be sure you have the place and tools as these can cost nearly as much as a rebuild.
I suggest strongly you put the fine 93 Jeep of your on a wrecker either way. Have it towed to a shop or home and go from there. You know a used one is a **** shoot so I suggest you check around on the web for a reputable repair place and have your transmission repaired there.
Best of luck on the Fix

Thanks for serving my friend SALUTE.
As for 'WHERE TO START" You will need to find a place you can leave it parked as you work on it.
Find that - remove the drive shaft.
Get a pan - and drop the back of the tranny and DRAIN the fluid. - - remove the pan and drain into a larger pan.
    - Remove the starter and drop the transmission on a sheet of plywood -- then take both the transmission and the torque converter into a shop and have them checked.
Then you can decide if it is worth it to you to fix.
    Best of luck

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee 4x4 it is starting to hop when turning

It's the gears in the front diff. that are bad. You will need to replace those gears or the entire front solid axle.

If your "check engine" light is turn on, I suggest scanned the PCM to know exactly what fault code is stored there. Additionally, could be some problem with the "temp sending unit".
