Question about 2001 Chrysler Town & Country

2 Answers

I have a 2001 town and country and yesterday I was driving went to turn left and steering locked up on me. Since I was in a turning lane I couldn't stop or pull over I had to yank the steering wheel and I heard a big crack. Now when I drive it sounds like broken pieces of plastic rolling arround inside steering. Has this happened to anyone else?

You will have to replace the ignition switch. Not just the tumbler section but the unit as a whole. The rear section of your switch which contains the steering wheel lock pin has failed. When you jerked the wheel so hard I'm sure you broke the lock pin housing. Before installing the new unit take it and your old ignition key to your local locksmith and have him re-key the new lock to match your old key. Doing this eliminates having a key for the ignition and another key for the doors.

2001 Town & Country. ALL LOCKED UP ( sounds like a country song) Put really Can Not turn Key, Stearing wheel, gear Shifter !!! AT ALL !!! Nothing preempted this ????

turn steering wheel all the way to the left then hold for a moment. or you can do it steer on the right all the way. you could still steer to the right then hold it, try turning your keys by pushing it in then turn it.

Key won't turn

Well sometimes you can wiggle the steering wheel back and forth even when wheel is locked just apply moderate pressure and try to wiggle steering wheel back and forth and at same time use your other hand and try to jiggle the key to the on position.

Ignition key will not turn

Thanks to the person with the wd40 suggestion. stuff that little red tube right up there and liberally spray. I just had the panic when I went to drive to the store in my 98 town & country and the key didn't turn. I read lots of varying solutions and was ready to get the emergency locksmith out here to replace the barrel and then I stumbled across that suggestion here. It made so much sense...and it worked. The barrel will probably still need to be replaced at some point, but not urgent.
thanks again!

2001 Town & Country ignition switch locked

you need to call a locksmith to come to your home. They will replace one or more of the tumblers/cylinders inside the ignition key area. The EXACT same thing happened to me. The Chrysler dealership wanted to charge me over $400 to fix the problem. My wonderful mobile locksmith knew exactly what was srong the nanosecond I mentions the make and model! $49.00 later - FIXED! good luck!

Cannot turn steering wheel

Make sure that the belt is not glazed and slipping on the pulley - they should both appear to be turning at the same speed. There is a chance that you have burned up the power steering pump and the noise you hear is the bearings complaining about the lack of lubricant they incurred.

Button that says "trac" over the steering colum

for traction control. most vechicles are automatic, puch it it may turn it on or off, if it turns off it should have a light that says traction off. Less drive wheels can make minor improvements to gas mileage as well as not wear other parts as much.
