Question about 1997 Chevrolet Malibu

2002 Kia Check Engine Light comes on and car is starting to ****.

2002 Kia Spectra check engine light came on and now the car has start to **** while taking off and hesitate a little when put into gear, especally reverse. I took it to AutoZone for a diagnostic test. The diagnostic test gave a (Code P0741). It also give a definition of the code as torque converter stuck off. Probable causes:

1. Open or short circuit condition
2. Poor electrical connection
3. Faulty torque converter solenoid

Are any of these serious problems and how can I get it fixed?

P0741 - This trouble code is about damper clutch, which improves fuel economy by matching power transmission effectiveness of automatic transmission Damper clutch consists of control valve and solenoid valve which converts electric signal to hydraulic signal by the TCU signal. Corresponding code will be displayed under following conditions when damper clutch is operated form TCU lock-up output time. -when the difference between engine revolution and input shaft revolution has been below 160 RPM. Torque converter solenoid (TCU) is the last thing you should look at to replace, the cause of its failure might be in a different area like worn seals. Nevertheless it is a serious malfunction of a gearbox as further usage may end in a complete gearbox failure and the only solution you will be left with is to rebuild the gearbox or get a new one. Before you start buying parts you should closlely inspect the inner cover seals for uneven wear or possible damage, short cicuit will be caused by fluid passed onto electric connection,

If your vehicle will not run right I'd call these a serious concern, easy to fix

however, I see more transmission concern with these codes than electrical

based on your experience, you may just want to seek assistance from the dealer ideally.

if you think you can handle at least a few tests and repairs and have a DVOM, let me know I'll get you started on some voltage drop tests

Hi! That's really bad... I would suspect the torque converter for the shifting is the problem. Its not that easy to replace this but if you do have a lot of patience you can do it but be sure you have a B man to help you out. Just remove the transmission and make sure to jack everything up and secure all wheels. Once you put down the transmission, look for the bell looking like the one you can see on fire fighters headquarters. Thats gonna be the torque converter or if you want you can search on the web what a torque converter looks like. Hope this helps and good luck!

    You can do it by yourself but as I say its a painful job to do. Dealership is an option to save you time and sweat.

The information below was complied by me, it explains what causes the check engine light to come on and the process of finding the cause.
When the Check Engine light is turned on the computer control unit (called the PCM) has sensed a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system. When this happens you will seldom feel the car engine run any different. There are about 200 possible faults that turn the Check Engine light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

2002 Kia Spectra Jerking Problem


check engine light comes of when the computer gets a sensor reading out of range. This could be an oxygen sensor(most likely) which will reduce performance of the engineand cause jerking. Most auto parts stores-autozone,advanced auto or O'rieley-will scan computer and tell you which sensor triggered check engine light. good luck
